Greetings!

McD's lemon

We hope summer has gotten off to a great wonderful start for all of our 2,000+ readers! Last month, in an embarrassing repeat of a prior month faux pas, we had to correct an error in our email. So (it being summer) we've decided to make lemonade out of lemons with a fantastic offer for you: If we EVER AGAIN insert an incorrect link in our newsletter, the first reader to notify us will receive a FREE $50 gift card to Amazon.com. We might even goof up on purpose occasionally, just to see if you catch it (and to give us a chance to say, "Yeah, we really did that on purpose!" LOL) How about them apples...er, lemons?

Fund Find of the Month:

Over the Rainbow and Under the Radar

rainbow and cloudsWhen investing our clients' money, I have a penchant for family-run, hands-on shops where everyone is on a first-name basis. This allows managers to concentrate on their areas of expertise, to the benefit of investors. James Balanced: Golden Rainbow (GLRBX), which sounds more like a breakfast cereal than a mutual fund, is the flagship fund of the Frank James family and fits the above criteria. I ran across this oddly-named fund last year while doing some research for a balanced fund for some of our clients. read more...

Tip of the Month: Is GOLD a Gamble?

gold dice

It's hard to turn on the TV or radio without hearing an advertisement explaining how you are doing yourself a grave injustice by not purchasing gold. (As if on cue, an ad for a "free gold guide" began playing on my radio just as I began typing this intro.) The "reasons" sound compelling, so I went in search of "the rest of the story". The findings may surprise you. read more...

(Almost) Famous Recipes of the Month: 4th Fav's!

bbq chicken quarters2Is the 4th of July truly authentic without firing up the grill? Once that grill is hot, it deserves something special. How about a tangy, sweet-and-sour sauce lovingly brushed on the crisp skin of juicy chicken? YUMMMM! Longtime readers are aware of my fondness for cranberries, which I believe get a bad rap at Thanksgiving. This sauce, a winning recipe i picked up from Southern Living many moons ago, is perfect for celebrating on the patio. Try my Barbecued Cranberry Chicken - you'll like it!

And...how do you quench the fire and give your tummy a little something special at the end of your meal? I think the perfect end to a 4th of July barbecue is this cool dish of sweet red, white, and blue bliss. Red, White, and Blue(berry) Dessert is not only picture-perfect, but also absolutely, lick-the-plate-and-eat-every-crumb delectable! read more...

In Closing...

JT light1It's been a little quiet around here lately - Michelle has been away on her annual mission trip to El Salvador with a group from Seven Oaks Church of Christ. Below, she is with one of the precious children that she taught in Sunday School. You can see more pictures from her trip on her Facebook page.

Michelle celebrates her independence by reaching out to others michelle on a missionthroughout the world - her spirit is unquenchable and I truly admire her generosity. Now she's back with her family, her soft bed, and, best of all, manning the front desk at 907 Paris Road using her office magic to set up new accounts that came in while she was away. Michelle can multitask like nobody's business - and all is now right with the world.

Did you know that the vote for independence actually took place on July 2 (in fact, John Adams refused to attend July 4th events in protest)? Or that the birth of independence was celebrated in July of 1776 by holding mock funerals for King George III? Or that the two major political parties (Federalists and Democratic-Republicans) held separate celebrations as the 18th century drew to a close? However you choose to celebrate our statue of liberty with fireworksindependence, we wish you a fabulous 4th of July - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!

 Best wishes and God bless,
