What's on our minds in March...

Social Security: did you realize that you do have some control over your returns? Recently, a family member told me that the Social Security rep he had met in anticipation of retiring with told him that he should begin drawing at age 62. This is a misrepresentation, especially if, all things considered, you are projected to live a long and healthy life. (NOTE TO READERS: Always be suspicious when a government employee tries to put something in your pocket.) On average, you'll get at least an 8% return on your money for each year you wait, but there are a number of issues to consider carefully before signing up for benefits. More to come in future issues.

Fund Find of the Month:

Boy, have I got a TIP(S) for you!

Thanks to the low rate of inflation in our economy in the last TIPS picturefew years, we haven't had to worry about prices increasing drastically. However, history and economics tell us that it's only a matter of time before inflation begins creeping (or roaring) back. In the meantime, can you inoculate your portfolio to prepare for price hikes? Fortunately, we've found a fund that even my 5th grade teacher could like.

(Almost) Famous Recipes of the Month: "Scout"-ing for Cookies

Coco-oatmeal cookiesWho can resist Girl Scout cookies? Being a former scout myself, they have a special place in my heart (and stomach). They haven't changed much, except for the price, 50 cents a box (just a couple of years ago, I think). One thing Girl Scout cookies can't give you, though, is warm, fresh-from-the oven bliss. As I was researching for this newsletter (working my way through a second box of Samoas), I began thinking.  Why not share some of my favorite cookie recipes with you? Is that good or bad - cookie recipes before we all  begin squeezing into bathing suits for spring choc choc-chip cookies3break? A little wicked? I don't have time to answers all those questions, but I DO have the recipes. The theme of these cookie recipes, by the way, is "cookie dough you can't stop eating" just in case you forget to preheat the oven. Toasted Coconut Oatmeal Cookies shows what one simple technique can do to turn plain old oatmeal cookies into something your friends will beg for. Chocolate-Chocolate Chip Cookies will bring out your inner chocoholic . Be careful who you share these with - you can use them to make peace ...or start a fire.

protecting your dollars from extinction

save the orphansMost of us have wondered at one time or another what it would be like to have a rich uncle who had written us into his will. Found money - how cool would that be? What if you could find money and forget about the rich uncle? It's possible...and you may have access to more money than you realize because you have orphans sitting quietly, just waiting to be adopted.
