Beth Walkup named Interim Director for Imagine Greater Tucson

Imagine Greater Tucson is happy to announce that Beth Walkup has been named to the position of IGT Interim Director. In her role, Walkup will be responsible for maximizing organizational capacity, overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of IGT, and ensuring a smooth transition into the next phase of the process.

Walkup has over 45 years of experience in non-profit and business management. Her experience in the region includes: Executive Director of Tucson Children's Museum, Interim Executive Director of the Food Bank of Southern Arizona, and Interim Executive Director of the Tucson Girls Chorus. She is also a member of the Board for Commerce Bank of Arizona and the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona.

Walkup's background in the region and expertise will be of great benefit for moving the process forward and for IGT's own development as an organization. Imagine Greater Tucson is both pleased and fortunate to have her as part of this effort and we look forward to the work ahead in building a stronger future for our region.

On June 27th, IGT held our eighth and final Scenario Building Workshop. Over the course of these workshops nearly 650 people from across the region came together to create over 100 unique alternative visions for the future of our region.  Many thanks to those of you who participated, as well as those who volunteered your time as a table facilitator or workshop volunteer. If you were unable to attend a workshop check out this video to share in the experience.

So, what happens now?

All of the regional vision maps created in the workshops have been scanned and are now being digitized. These digital maps will then be analyzed to discover common and recurrent themes and ideas. These themes will form the basis of a set of possible future scenarios. These scenarios, together with the current trend scenario, will be shared with the public for evaluation from late 2011 to early 2012.

See the results

This past April, IGT released the trend scenario; that is, where this region is likely headed if we continue along our current trajectory.  Now the community has had their say and developed and submitted their own alternatives to that trend. Those alternatives - in the form of the over 100 workshop maps - are now available for viewing online.

What differences are you seeing between the trend and the maps?  What themes do you think are emerging? How do each of these alternative visions for our future correspond with your own? Take a moment to share your thoughts in the comments section under each map.

Values in Focus values

As part of our ongoing commitment to base our future work and efforts on the foundation of our Shared Regional Values, we will take an opportunity each month to highlight one of the values in this newsletter. In this edition, we will take look at walkability.

WE VALUE...

A Walkable Community

WHAT WE'RE SAYING...

"Creating neighborhood hubs where grocery stores, drugstores, department stores and other necessities are within walking distance would encourage neighbors knowing neighbors and reduce the problems caused by automobiles."

"I feel that a city of Tucson's size should have more positive public spaces and more pedestrian-oriented areas. I personally feel that these types of spaces are better for the community and overall health."

"I like how Central Tucson is a walkable community. It's important to be able to walk outside your home or work and be able to interact with others and not be reliant on a car."

"More trees and walkways so I can walk when it's hot."

WHAT IS WALKABLE?

A walkable community, at its most basic level, is a community where one is able to walk. However this is far from an adequate -or satisfying- definition. A walkable community, really, is one in which walking to a variety of destinations is both a pleasurable and convenient experience and a true alternative to other means of transportation: a community, in short, where one will choose to walk.

DID YOU KNOW?

Walkability can be judged by both the quality and amount of pedestrian infrastructure and amenities provided in a given area (such as sidewalks, trees for shade, universal design features, benches, safety, attractive or interesting things to look at, amount of activity, etc.) and by accessibility to any number of destinations; including shops and stores, offices, parks, and transit stops. The sense of accessibility, of course, varies with the individual, but is commonly considered to be anything that is within a 10-to-20 minute radius. Since a typical human adult walks at a rate of about 3 miles per hour (with some variation), a destination is accessible to a pedestrian when it is within a distance of roughly 1/2 to 1 mile.

There is now a growing body of research supporting the idea that walkable neighborhoods can be linked to a number of quality of life benefits; including to physical and mental health benefits, social involvement, and overall happiness.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Do you live in a walkable neighborhood? If not, how can it be made more walkable? What destinations are within 10 minutes of your home? Within 20? Check your neighborhood's walkscore and continue the conversation on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/IGTucson. Also, please share any other articles or stories you have about walkable neighborhoods and communities.
