Autumn March Madness

You may have snoozed through the NCAA Finals between Butler and UConn, but there was no snoozing at the Autumn March Madness Finals!

A sellout crowd cheered the teams as the Saluda Brats defeated the Therapeutics in a close game, 404 to 402.  The Brats were led by Captain Rosemary Lopez, CNA, along with Jerry Skipper and Freddie Gary, residents.

14 teams competed in the annual Wii basketball tournament, with each team consisting of one staff member as captain and two residents.  "This was my first year as a captain," Barbara Hamilton, CNA, said, "and I'll definitely be back with a team next year."

Rehab Offers New Cooking Class

Watch out Food Network!  The Autumn Rehab Department could be producing the next great cook!

Our Rehab Department has introduced a weekly trans-disciplinary Cooking Class for our residents.  Small groups of residents challenge their skills by preparing and cooking favorite recipes, enjoying small group, family style dining and just kicking back, relaxing, and enjoying the aroma of freshly cooking foods.

According to Matilda Patrick, OT, the group is about way more than just enjoying a home cooked meal.  "There are a huge number of skills involved in preparing, cooking and eating a simple meal," she said.

all by himself!

"Our residents have often had those skills diminished or lost due to health problems.  The new cooking group allows them to gain confidence in relearning the skills and finding new ways to do routine tasks."

And there is also the chance to try new foods.  Danny Davis had never had a taco before joining the group.  "He ate 3 tacos the first time we cooked them and now refers to himself as "Taco Davis", Patrick said.

The class impacts a lot of non-food activities as well.  Participants have been

observed opening up and interacting with others on new levels, sharing work tasks, assisting peers and engaging in conversations on a level not seen before their participation in the group.

"The Cooking Class draws a lot of interest," Price said with a laugh, "mainly from the staff!"

March Fun and Frolicing

Autumn Care doesn't let a good chance for a party go by as evidenced by our annual Mardi Gras Parade.Costumes, masks and beads were the dress for the day as residents and staff paraded through the facility to the sound of New Orleans Jazz.

Sally and Lisa lead the parade.

A packed room of "faux" Irish celebrated the wearing of the green on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th.  Activities Assistant D Ann Byrd quizzed the group on Irish lore and Irish limericks.  Ron Hettinger shared a few limericks, several of which cannot be shared here!?!

While the "pub patrons" enjoyed green treats, Autumn Saluda's very own Autumn Uke Tones entertained the group with familiar Irish folk tones.
