April's Topic: Forklift Pre-Operational Inspections

By: John Mayo-Corp. Safety Trainer

OSHA requires that all forklifts be examined at least daily before being placed in service. Forklifts used on a round-the-clock basis must be examined after each shift. (29 CFR 1910.178(q)(7)

Before the lift truck is started several items must be inspected including tires, chains, mast and other parts that can only be observed safely while the forklift is not running.

Once the forklift has been started, items such as steering, brakes, acceleration, hydraulics, lights and horn are just a few of the items that must be checked off as functioning each day before use.

See a more complete list at OSHA's Powered Industrial Trucks eTool HERE.  Then visit our website and download our forklift inspection forms HERE.

Inspections must be performed by operators that have been trained to do so.  If your operators have not been sufficiently trained by a reputable and knowledgeable trainer, please attend April's operator training at your local Tri-Lift branch.
