"Volunteers aren't paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless."

When MIB began its first program in January, 2007; finances were very tight so MIB sent out a desperate plea for volunteers to run an art program as part of the after school program. Nancy Williams, a dear friend of COO, Jacque Daughtry's since 1988, answered the call and has been volunteering ever since! As Nancy is so fond of saying "You don't say "no" to Jacque so I just do what she tells me to do!"

Nancy began as a weekly volunteer in that first program at Walnut Bend Elementary and then moved to a two day/week volunteer commitment in various programs at Revere Middle School the following year where she continued until May, 2011. She also volunteered with the 3rd grade Peer Groups at our Shadowbriar Elementary after school program in the 2010-11 school year. The past 2 years, she and her husband Joe, have hosted year end pool parties, with dinner, at their home for Revere students . . . a HUGE hit!
There is LOTS of excitement in Nancy's home this year, as their daughter Nina will be married on May 19th! Due to Nina's upcoming wedding, Nancy had planned to take this year off from volunteering at MIB; but she couldn't stay away and has designed and is assisting each of our Steps 2 Success sites with their 50 States/50 Flowers tile art project! In addition to volunteering at program sites, she has taken kids on field trips, supervised kids at the annual Lemonade Day event, has taken MIB "graduates" out for meals and attended middle school assemblies . . . she IS part of the fabric of MIB! We LOVE Ms. Nancy and are so grateful that she is part of the MIB family!! |

We applaud and most gratefully acknowledge all the donors who in 2011 supported Making It Better's mission to improve the quality of life for low income, at-risk children by offering them academic intervention, positive activities and role models. There is no way to fully express our gratitude for the loyalty of all of our donors.
We at Making It Better are continually inspired by the dedication and generosity of donors like Hardie & Andrea Morgan who answer the call to give again and again.
Hardie and Andrea are long time Houston residents and extremely important to MIB! Thanks in part to their generous donations over the past two years; MIB has been able to continue programs which might otherwise have been cancelled due to lack of funding. The Morgans live and work in west Houston. Their son, William, graduated from Houston Christian and is now attending the University of Tulsa and their daughter, Ariana, is a junior at Houston Christian where Andrea spends much of her time volunteering.
Hardie is the Executive Director of Ministries Support at Grace Presbyterian Church and a long time volunteer at Paul Revere Middle School where he is currently assisting with their Junior Achievement Program. After meeting MIB COO Jacque Daughtry at a west Houston luncheon, it was at Paul Revere that Hardie and Jacque became reacquainted and Hardie was introduced to Making It Better and our efforts in west Houston.
Impressed first and foremost with the passion of the people involved with MIB, their connection with Grace Presbyterian, Revere Middle School, west Houston and education focused programs, Hardie wanted to know more! He asked Jacque, "What is MIB's greatest need right now?" Then, on the spot, he immediately agreed to fund the entire cost of adding Mad Science to an after school program for a group of kids who would never have the opportunity to experience science in this way without his support! "I invest in committed people who are doing things that I am passionate about", Hardie explained. He elaborated stating that teachers are often the last line of defense between a child's success or his future incarceration. Statistics show us that high rates of incarceration are connected with childhood poverty and educational disparities. Recognizing that Making It Better was successfully addressing these educational disparities head on, Hardie knew that the return on his investment would be meaningful. "Donors don't want to invest in something that just yields a 'feel good result', they want to invest in organizations that yield results that ultimately have the ability to change lives, and that's what Making It Better is all about!"
Making It Better salutes Hardie and Andrea Morgan and ALL of our generous donors. Not only are our donors crucial to the success of our organization, they are the heart and soul of who and what we are. We realize how many incredible organizations and noble causes there are in the Houston area alone and appreciate your decision to support the children served by Making It Better.
