STEM-H Teachers Complete 2012 NHF Program
In early August, the 2012 Naval Historical Foundation STEM-H Fellowship Program completed its second successful year. The NHF program brings concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to students through a study of the history of the U.S. Navy. Ten teachers from around the country had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to spend two weeks in an intense program led by NHF's Captain John Paulson, USN (Retired). The program was broken into two groups running throughout July and into August.
The four teachers in the first group were: Benjamin J. Barris (Texas); Janice Cunningham (South Carolina); John Clark (Florida); and Cynthia Woolston (Missouri). They began their fellowship program at the Navy Museum's Cold War Gallery on 9 July, and spent the following two weeks receiving instruction from experts on U.S. Navy submarines and technology. Topics covered included sonar, radar, ballistic missiles, torpedoes, nuclear propulsion, environmental controls, and buoyancy. Instruction was given by both active duty and retired submariners. The teachers also had the opportunity for an exciting trip to Naval Station Norfolk, where they were given a two hour tour of the nuclear attack submarine USS Scranton (SSN 756). You can see more photos of their two week program here, on our Facebook page. The teachers in the second group were Donald Belle (Maryland); J. Paul Parker (South Carolina); Bill Sanford (Virginia); and Danielle Thomas (South Carolina). This group was joined for the initial portion of the two week program by two returning teachers from the 2011 program, Ken Nagel and Jeff Derda from North Carolina. This group of STEM-H teachers were the first to undergo training on aviation, surface, and subsurface aspects of the U.S. Navy. The team made a trip to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, where they were able to tour the control tower, machine shops, and wind tunnels - and were lucky enough see the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in the air. The following day, they trekked down to Naval Station Norfolk, where they toured the guided missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG 52). We've got photos of their trips on our Facebook page. The end result of each two week program was a series of sophisticated lesson plans developed individually by each teacher. The plans will incorporate the history and science of the Navy during the Cold War, to teach STEM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to high school and middle school students. We'll be rolling them out over the next month or so on the Education page of our Cold War Gallery website.

We Want Your Feedback: How Do You Prefer to Read NHF News and Book Reviews? We regularly share two email newsletters with our membership and friends: WE Pull Together, (which you are reading now), as well Naval History Books Reviews. Both are published monthly, and it is important to us to understand how our membership wants to read their news. Our goal is to share not only the latest projects and programs of the Foundation, but also important information from around the naval history community. And our Book Reviews program provides a steady stream of feedback on the latest publications in the field.
We are looking to streamline our layout in upcoming editions. Before making any changes to our current formats, we want to hear from our readers. How would you prefer to read these two e-letters? Do you like the current format, where the full content of articles and books reviews is contained in the body of the email message? Or would you prefer to receive a shorter message, using headlines and a short introductory blurb, with a link to the full body of the article on the NHF website?
Please cast your vote in our online poll, using the link below. And if you have additional feedback or concerns, please email Dave Colamaria at dcolamaria@navyhistory.org.

Online Museum Store Launched This summer we launched a new online store supporting the National Museum of the United States Navy. In late 2011 we renovated the interior of the store and stocked an entirely new selection of merchandise. Now, selected portions of our catalog can be purchased online. We've got a wide range of merchandise available online: challenge coins, ballcaps, t-shirts, DVD's and CD's, posters, presentation items, and much, much more. We carry items celebrating the history and traditions of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. We'll continue to add more items over the coming months.
We hope you'll consider shopping with us. Please visit the store online using the link below.
And remember that a percentage of all sales goes directly to the Navy Museum to support their numerous exhibits and educational programs.
