Slade Cutter: A Letter Home from Pearl Harbor

Slade CutterWe're also commemorating the events of 7 December on our blog, starting with a story on Slade Cutter, renowned commanding officer of USS Seahorse (SS 304). He is famous for his dynamic leadership during World War II. His wartime exploits, sinking 19 Japanese vessels, are well known, as are his days on the football field at the Naval Academy. As we remember the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, we've posted a letter written on 11 December 1941 by Cutter to his mother. It features some grisly observations, as well as bold predictions for a positive outcome to the war. The letter is from Cutter's personal collection of letters, currently archived at the Navy Department Library. The donation of these letters was facilitated by the Naval Historical Foundation in 2005, just prior to Cutter's death.

Please visit our NHF blog to read the full text of Cutter's letter home. And check back on our blog next week for a story on rare film footage of the Pearl Harbor attack, from the collection of the Naval History and Heritage Command.
Year End Support Campaign Note!

Thanks to all who have sent in your annual year-end contribution to support the Naval Historical Foundation.
