NHF Railtrip to Mariners' Museum 9 November 2011

NHF member Chief Ty Robbins is offering passage on his private railcar "Navy 118" for up to eight passengers (round trip) on an Amtrak train departing from Washington's Union Station at 7:30 AM on Wednesday 9 November and returning that evening at 8:19 PM.  Depending on the response to this offer, we could double the passenger list to 16 by renting a van to haul one group of passengers down to the Mariners' Museum and return with the group that rode the train down in the AM.  While in Newport News, trip attendees would visit the Mariners' Museum with its nationally-acclaimed Monitor Center and have lunch.  While Ty is offering breakfast/dinner in addition to rail passage, those interesting in attending may be expected to cover added costs for other meals, museum admission, van rental (to be determined in the $40-$70 range).

Please contact Dr. Dave Winkler [email protected] by 21 October if you are interested. If there is an overwhelming response we will have a drawing on 25 October and notify every one of the results immediately.

New York City Pickle Night Dinner

This year marks the 206th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, and the ninth New York City Pickle Night Dinner will mark this history-changing event on 11 November 2011. Those who appreciate the historical significance of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and the lore associated with his life are invited to attend this special event. The Dinner is named for HMS Pickle, which was present at the Battle of Trafalgar and which brought the news to Britain of Nelson's victory and death in the battle. This event has been a perennial success, with guests from the United States, Canada, England, France, Switzerland and The Bahamas.

Admiral Sir Jonathon Band GCB DL, former First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff and currently Chairman of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, will be the principal speaker. Sir Jonathon also serves as Chairman of the 1805 Club, an organization dedicated to the conservation of memorials to Georgian naval heroes. His distinguished seagoing career includes service during the Falklands campaign and NATO operations in Bosnia, as well as a tour with the U.S. Navy in the guided missile destroyer USS Belknap . His last command at sea was in the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious.

Reception is at 6:00pm with Dinner at 7:30pm. The event is black tie or military equivalent.

Ticket price is $240.00 per person. Space is limited; if you wish to reserve a place, please contact Sally McElwreath Callo, Tel. (212) 972 8667 or e-mail [email protected].

The National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth, The Nelson Society, and The 1805 Club are supporting this event. American Friends of the Royal Naval Museum, our sponsor, is recognized as a tax exempt organization.

War of 1812 Speakers Needed!

Since 1997, the Naval Historical Foundation (NHF) has maintained a list of members who are available to speak to groups on naval historical topics in their areas of expertise.  Many of our speakers are scholars who have conducted research and are widely published.  Other speakers are Navy veterans "who were there" or have strong professional knowledge on a subject. The 2012-2015 Bicentennial of War of 1812 offers an opportunity for NHF to focus that speaker list in support of the Commemorations Division of the Naval History and Heritage Command in conjunction with bicentennial events around the nation.

With the emerging requirement to support Bicentennial of the War of 1812-related events during the 2012-2015 centennial years, NHF, in concert with other commemoration partners, proposes to create a specific speaker pool of individuals with knowledge of the many aspects of naval history and heritage related to this critical juncture in the early history of the United States Navy.

No speaker contact information will be made available to inquirers without the speaker first being consulted. On the Naval Historical Foundation website and in other promotional materials, we will expand our on line listing to identify your name and the geographic area in which you reside (Northern Virginia, San Diego area, etc.) so that requesters can consider logistical costs (travel, lodging) before asking about your availability.  We will also publish a prcis of the topic information you provide to us so requesters can determine which speaker may best address the interest of their audience.
