Air Spading Retains 66% More Roots for Replanting Trees!

Most do-it-yourselfers who want to transplant a tree dig up the ground around its base with a shovel & spade and end up cutting off its large roots. This causes significant stress to the tree and can sometimes kill it.

Air spading  is a relatively new concept for home owners that Maltby has embraced for more than 3 years.

Air spading gently breaks up compacted soil blocking water and nutrients from reaching the tree's roots. Maltby uses air spading for corrective root pruning and transplanting mature trees without damaging their roots. Once the bare root system is exposed, Maltby adds organic nutrients to feed the tree.

Use Air Spading For:

  • Tree Root Invigoration
  • Surface Roots
  • Digging Trenches for Walkways & Foundations Without Damaging the Root Systems or Killing Mature Trees
What's Bugging YOU?

Guess this mystery bug & be entered to win a prize from Natural Tree & Lawn Care!

This bug looks like tiny white rice & trails a white cottony mass behind it. It apperas in clusters on the underside of leaves. Plants that are infected with this bug also have black sooty mold on the surface of the leaf - but no holes.  The soot makes the leaves turn black which weakens the plant, making it thinner and less vigerous. Submit your response here good luck!

ALERT: If you have this bug call Lauren Maltby ASAP to schedule a no obligation Detect & Diagnose visit from an arborcare professional.

Peak Tick & Mosquito Season Is Here!*

1. Eliminate Ticks & Prevent Lyme Disease

Ticks hang out in wooded areas, on tips of branches and in tall grass waiting for children, pets and rodents to pass by and feed on.  They are also a major carrier of Lyme disease.

1) Keep tick carrying rodents out of your yard by raking up spillage from bird feeders and bird houses.

2) Eliminate rodent habitats by fixing loose and broken stone walls.

3) Prevent pets, rabbits, chipmunks, mice, squirrels and deer from carrying ticks into your outdoor home by treating transition areas with a natural insecticide  that is safe for people, pets and wild life.  Call Lauren Maltby to set up an appointment.

2. Fight Off Mosquitos & Prevent EEE & West Nile Virus

Mosquitos have been tied to break outs of EEE  and West Nile Virus.  Most mosquitos are active in the early morning and evening however, the Asian Tiger mosquito , which was recently found in Massachusetts, is more aggressive during the day.

1) Bird baths attract birds but standing water is a primary breeding ground for mosquitos.  Prevent mosquitos from breeding in your outdfoor home by eliminating standing water in water buckets and old tires, and keeping bird baths and dog bowls clean.

2) If you live near a wetland, require drainage or would like to dramatically reduce insects before an outdoor party, call Lauren Maltby to discuss eco-friendly spray treatments  and storm drainage solutions.

*These do-it-yourself solutions are only some of the ways you can ward off disease carrying pests.  For professional, more rigorous solutions to keep your outdooor home pest free, call Lauren Maltby for eco-friendly treatments that are safe for people and pets.

On April 30th, Maltby and Company and Natural Tree & Lawn Care  celebrated Arbor Day 2011  by improving the safety, aesthetics and health of the trees and plants in Boston's historic Back Bay Fens.  From the Fenway Victory Gardens  to Avenue Louis Pasteur, our team of 20 Maltby Tree professionals pruned winter-damaged trees, removed hazardous & declining trees and planted replacement trees provided by Boston Parks Department .  Natural Tree & Lawn Care treated existing trees with organic fertilizer to keep them healthy and beautiful.

Maltby has been celebrating Arbor Day for over 40 years and this year, we were joined by the Emerald Necklace Conservancy,

Fenway Civic Association ,Fenway Garden Society  and local green companies.  "Arbor Day provides us with a wonderful opportunity to give back to our community.  We want to help communities by helping their trees live long, healthy lives,"  said Bill Maltby,  a second generation Maltby and co-owner of Maltby and Company.   (See Boston Globe article.)
