Dear Friends,
Summer is still trying to reach us, and hope springs eternal, yes?
As we hit the sunny days with day trips to our local hangouts and trips to vacation lands, I want to take a moment and say: HEY! Remember your yoga practice! With warm weather comes the opportunity to move more easily into the postures. Problem areas seem to unstick and we realize why yoga developed in a tropical climate.
Teachers also take breaks during this time, and subs are critical to keeping the boat afloat. Teachers at the Taj make every effort to find quailty instructors to take their places while gone, many of them being other instructors from Taj Yoga. However, subs are not free. Please support your favorite teacher while he or she takes a holiday and continue to attend class. As I see it, it's a win-win. You will either find another teacher who is class worthy, or you will appreciate your current teacher more! See the link below for our Fourth of July weekend schedule.
On another note, if you want to know what a dry-land water ballet looks like, join me and Taj Yoga Teatro for an evening of yoga and dance performances featuring "Ondine 3," Friday, July 15 at 7:00pm. The original choreography of "Ondine 2" is being expanded and now includes "waves" around Ondine. In addition, April Kieburtz will perform "Pommel Horse," a piece incorporating six variations of the splits (hanumanasana).
Safe and happy summer travels,
Theresa Elliott Director, Taj Yoga Co-Director, Pacific Yoga Teacher Training info@tajyoga.com

Teacher's Corner
by Heidi Fischer, Taj Instructor
Sometimes I see students struggling to relax during savasana, and sometimes I struggle with it myself. But I was recently reminded of how important this practice is. I've always been a somewhat nervous flyer. I usually try to mitigate my sense of powerlessness by mentally sending "good vibes" to the airplane so that it will hold together and function as it's supposed to, and we'll all arrive safely. The last time I flew, I didn't do this. I tried to accept that my fate was in the hands of forces beyond my control. There was nothing for me to do but surrender and listen to my iPod. I surprised myself by finding comfort in this practice.
There's so much we can do in yoga class to make our asanas (poses) stronger, more comfortable, better aligned. Many different ways to target particular muscles and learn about our bodies. Endless practices to affect our breathing and observe our minds. So much power we do have. So many actions we can take.
But I'm reminded that action must be balanced with surrender. Each asana requires certain muscles to work, and others to relax. Savasana (corpse), the resting pose that comes at the end of class, gives us an opportunity to completely and consciously let go. Sometimes I find myself cutting savasana short. It just doesn't feel like I'm doing anything. But that's the point. The ability to let go when it's appropriate is just as important as the ability to take action when it's needed. To practice letting go is to embrace the reality that there are parts of life that are out of our control.
So I remind myself, when I've done all I can....savasana.
