Maui Orchids
While many species of the orchids bloom year-round on Maui, fall weather prompts the Dendrobium orchids to spike and bloom. Clinging on sturdy stalks, Dendrobium flowers bunch together as one big brilliant bouquet. The blossoms remain gorgeous for over a month.
Maui orchid growers take great care when packaging and shipping these plants assuring the fragile stems remain intact during travel. Two-day shipment is available anywhere in the mainland US from Maui. Visit Maui Flower Growers' Association to order Maui-grown live orchid plants. You'll not only support Maui's farmers, you'll give a gift that keeps on giving.

Fall's Floral Curiosities
This Halloween season, spice-up your home with unique and unusual flowers from Maui. With strange shapes and tempting textures, an arrangement of these floral curiosities will magically transform your table's centerpiece into a conversation piece! As the temperature cools on Maui, the island's most intriguing floral varieties begin to flaunt their showy blooms. Tilting towards the sky on long green stalks, the bright blue petals and glossy orange sepals of the Bird-of-Paradise glow like an amber crown.
Growing Bird-of-Paradise on Maui is truly a labor of love. Transplanted from Madagascar, this is one of the few flowers in the world pollinated by birds' feet. Traveling from plant to plant, the weighty African sunbird inadvertently fertilizes each flower as it lands to sip the plant's sweet nectar. Lacking this natural pollinator, the commercially grown Bird-of-Paradise flowers on Maui are hand-pollinated by local growers with keen eyes and steady hands.

Brought to Maui from South Africa, the King Protea is as big as a sunflower but twice as dense. Looking as if it was sprinkled with confectioners' sugar, the flowerhead's fluffy white center and hair-covered pink bracts continually tempt your touch.
|

Transplanted from West Australia, the Orange Frost Banksia feels like a tightly woven knitted afghan. Composed of hundreds of neatly arranged unopened flowers, as these wooly buds begin to open, the flowerhead is adorned with a fluffy band of orange fur. These and many other exotic floral species are found in Maui-grown flower gift boxes, baskets and wreaths this season. A perfect gift for someone planning a sophisticated Autumn soirée or a fun-filled costume party for the kids, moving away from the ordinary and to the extraordinary is a simple as saying "trick, or treat."
Happy Fall!

Meet our members: Anuhea Farms Judy Merten's friends like to call her "Ms. Happy" because her personality sparkles as much as the ruby-red Mardi Gras beads that often dangle around her neck. Working together with her sweetheart of over 40 years, Judy and Bill Merten have successfully transformed 14-acres of barren land in Olinda Maui into Anuhea Flowers, a thriving protea farm that today is a major supplier of protea throughout the U.S.
Judy met Bill in 1964 on Oahu while he was studying for his Masters Degree in Soil Fertility at the University of Hawaii. After graduation, the two got married and began to raise their family. But just like the soil, Bill and Judy would shift and travel around before settling down on Maui.
After spending 20 years working in the Philippians, Mainland China and Hong-Kong, Bill and Judy were longing to return to Hawaii. In 1994, Bill and Judy leased old cattle grazing land located at the 2,300-foot level on the slope of Haleakala Maui. For the next 2 years, Bill amended the soil, worked the land and reaped the bounty of his bloomin' proteas. In 1996, Anuhea Farm had their first major harvest. Judy joined Bill shortly thereafter, and together they've planted their roots and extended their successful Ag careers on Maui's mountainside. Fourteen years later, many different varieties of protea make up Anuhea Farm's plant mix and Bill and Judy are now one of the larger producers of Hawaiian protea.
And while no grass ever grew under their feet, asparagus surely does. Understanding the importance of diversification, Bill operates Maui's only successful large-scale asparagus growing business in Kula; Judy operates a adorable retail shop in Makawao that sells her protea gift boxes and wreaths, and arts and crafts from Maui's local artisans.
When you order flowers from Anuhea Farms, you can be sure that Judy and her staff will include a little something special. In her effort to support Maui's crafters, Judy includes original cards or labels from local artist Deybra Fair, or hand-weaved coconut palm frond baskets from Blake Komoda. In her desire to make sure each customer is satisfied, Judy insists on including extra flowers. "I just want people to be happy," she gleams.
Specializing in stunning protea wreaths, protea baskets and protea gift boxes, call Judy or Bill at Anuhea Flowers for your holiday gift giving and holiday decorating. Giving or receiving Anuhea Flowers is an open invitation for us all to become "Ms. or Mr. Happy."
