Greetings!

Dr. Harper

Dean Doreen C. Harper

The events of the past months have been difficult. We have all witnessed unprecedented disaster in our communities and state. I continue to hear accounts of our alumni and student's resolve to meet both the immediate and long-term health care needs of our citizens. Thank you to each and every student and alumni that played a role in the exceptional response.  In particular, I would like to mention our alumni who are chief nursing officers here in Central AL who provided exceptional leadership to our area hospitals: Velinda Block DNP '11, Greg Eagerton BSN '85, MSN '91, Patrice Jones MSN '03, Jackie Martinek BSN '80, Carol Ratcliffe MSN '95, and Deborah Wesley MSN '85. Our alumni at all levels of health care organizations took major leadership roles in the disaster relief, meeting emergency needs in local hospitals and community-based care settings.

Please join with me in congratulating our recent graduates and keeping those affected by the recent tornadoes in your thoughts. Both graduates and storm victims are beginning a new chapter and need the support of the SON family.

Kindly,

Doreen C. Harper, PhD, RN, FAAN

Dean and Fay B. Ireland Endowed Chair in Nursing

Disaster Relief

The UAB School of Nursing immediately responded to the urgent needs of our community after the recent tornados that devasted many areas of Alabama.

The Student Nursing Association (SNA) collected needed supplies for storm victims. Supplies were dropped off at the School of Nursing and included: bottled water, diapers, wipes, formula, pillows, blankets, and basic hygiene items.  These items were then taken to the American Red Cross and other relief agencies across the city and state. Faculty helped staff a clinic sponsored by M-Power Ministries, a clinical partner and local non-profit, for victims in Pratt City, Alabama. Watch the video below to learn more about the School's response.

The School is continuing our relief efforts and need your help!  Please consider donating to the Emergency Fund for Student Success, which meets urgent and unforeseen short-term financial needs of students.  This fund is available for students who have been affected by the recent tornados. We hope you had a wonderful Nurses Week (May 6th-12th). The UAB SON observed this occasion with a special event honoring its alumni and local nurses.  The event was an Open House to view UAB's Collection of Florence Nightingale Letters.  The rare collection of 50 original Florence Nightingale Letters was donated in 1950 by Lawrence Reynolds to the UAB Reynolds Historical Library. We had several special guests stop by and view the letters including: Sue Hassmiller, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Senior Adviser for Nursing, and Deb Wesley, CNO at Children's Health System of Birmingham.

In addition, the UAB SON has spearheaded a campaign to display reproductions of these treasured letters in an exhibit at the School.  If interested in donating to this project to put the letters on permanent display, please contact us!

You can view electronic copies of these special letters at UAB Digital Collections.

Additionally, Dean Doreen Harper, on behalf of the School's students and staff, also honored the 100-member faculty with gifts to recognize their special role in nursing education.

Student Highlights

Congratulations Spring 2011 Graduates!!

Faculty, staff, and students joined together May 2st-7th to celebrate with our graduates and their families at a variety of ceremonies and receptions. We kicked off graduation week with the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) Hooding Ceremony, on Monday, May 2nd, at the UAB Alumni House. On Thursday, May 5th, a ceremony and reception were held to recognize the students who have successfully completed Phase I of the Accelerated Master's in Nursing Pathway (AMNP).  These students will now transition into the Master's Program.

On Friday, May 6th, 13 SON students were recognized for their scholastic achievements, leadership, and service to the school and community at the Annual Honors Convocation. That evening, approximately 150 Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) students were recognized for completing their undergraduate degree at the BSN Senior Recognition Ceremony.

The SON also hosted a Graduate Brunch for the PhD and MSN students on Saturday, May 7th. Graduates, families, friends, and faculty were able to take photos and enjoy refreshments together prior to the culminating events of the week - the UAB Doctoral Hooding Convocation Ceremony, held at the Alys Stephens Center, and the UAB Commencement Ceremony held at Bartow Arena.

Students Win Spring Fling Softball Game

On April 4th, The UAB SON held its first annual Spring

Spring Fling
The Eviscerators with Dean Harper

Fling.  The Eviscerators, student team, took on the Lethal Arrhythmias, the faculty, staff, and alumni team, at UAB's Dowdy Field.  "Chubby Bunny" and a "Water Balloon Toss" were played between innings, and everyone enjoyed BBQ and fixins.  It was a good effort for both teams; however, the Eviscerators dominated and won the game!  Congratulations students!
