Advance Knowledge, Inspire Lifelong Learning & Strengthen Our Community

The Friends of the Library Events Planning Committee met last week to brainstorm on our Live in the Library program. We determined that we needed a mission statement to guide us through the process and agreed that 'Advance Knowledge, Inspire Lifelong Learning and Strengthen Our Community' was an accurate and  succinct statement of our purpose. With these guidelines in mind, we hope to offer you an energized and varied program of events in the months to come.

The Friends of the New Smyrna Beach Library encourage and support development of the library by providing funding and assistance for events and special items that are not covered in the budget.

Surfing in New Smyrna Beach
Sundays with Authors

Kate Cumiskey, March 21, 2pm

About the book: 'Surfing in New Smyrna Beach'
'New Smyrna Beach is a lovely slip of island off Central Florida's east coast, an inlet below the bustle of Daytona and worlds away. Legend tells us Ponce de Leon landed here before sailing to St. Augustine to found North America's oldest city. Bordered on the west by the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, the south by Cape Canaveral, the north by the notorious inlet of Crane's The Open Boat, and the east by the Atlantic, New Smyrna is paradise found. The town has fostered more world-class surfers than any other on earth. Here surfing is not a sport, hobby, or pastime. Surfing is a way of life with its own rules, language, culture, and customs.' More...

Kate Cumiskey received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2006. She has four surfing sons!

Mary Clay, March 28, 2pm

Described by 'The Examiner', Beaumont, TX, as The Ya Ya Sisterhood meets the First Wives Club, 'The Turtle Mound Murder' (the first book in the Daffodil Mystery Series) has received national recognition (four-star rating from Romantic Times Book Club among others).

Harriet Klausner, #1 Reviewer for Amazon, et al. called 'Bike Week Blues' "...one of the funniest capers this reviewer has had the privilege of reading." The third book, 'Murder is the Pits', was dubbed "A triumph!" by 'Midwest Book Review'.

Bethune: Out of the Darkness into the Light of Freedom

"Throughout this life experience we were blessed with parents who taught us by example to give to others, to share no matter how little we might have. How do you arrive at peace in your very soul when you see the legacy left to you being stolen away? It is the story of 'Bethune: Out of the darkness into the light of freedom'. One does not have to be visibly shackled to be enslaved. Enslavement can come through fear and anger."

Finding a Book Club in New Smyrna Beach

On a mission to locate our local book clubs

Who are you? How many members do you have? Where and how frequently do you meet? Is membership open or limited? These questions are frequent, but while everyone seems to know there are many book clubs in our community, no one seems to have a comprehensive overview.  So please contact us with information on your book club so that we can better respond to questions from our readers. The Friends of the Library would also like to expand a section of our website to include contributions from local book clubs. So don't wait. Contact us today.

Thank you!
