Researchers at Arizona Cancer Center, University of Arizona, suggest that a green tea concentrate may help some people boost their metabolic defense against toxins capable of causing cancer.

In a study of 42 people, the concentrate, composed of chemicals known as green tea catechins in amounts equal to that found in 8-16 cups of green tea, boosted production of the enzymes, which belong to the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family, by as much as 80 percent in some participants. GST enzymes are believed to be crucial to the body's defense against cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins, according to the study's lead investigator, H.-H. Sherry Chow, Ph.D., a research associate professor at the University of Arizona.

"They actually convert known carcinogens to non-toxic chemicals, and studies have shown a correlation between deficient expression of these enzymes and increased risk of developing some cancers," Chow said.

"Expression of this enzyme varies dramatically in people due to genetic variation and environmental factors," Chow added. "Green tea catechins somehow increase gene expression of these enzymes, which can be an advantage to people with low levels to start with," he added.

The study was intended to see if green tea catechin concentrate had any effect on the levels of GST enzymes in healthy individuals, an examination that could explain the tea's anti-cancer properties.

Healthy volunteers were asked to abstain from consuming any tea or tea-related products for four weeks and then blood was drawn and baseline GST enzyme levels were determined. After taking the green tea concentrate for four weeks, a second blood test
was taken.

Researchers found that little variation occurred for those with high or medium GST levels. But it had its most significant effect in volunteers whose baseline blood measurements showed low GST activity, an 80 percent increase compared to baseline GST activity.

"This is the first clinical study to show proof that chemicals in green tea can increase detoxification enzymes in humans. There may be other mechanism in play by which green tea may protect against cancer development, but this is a good place to start," Chow said.

The study is published in the August issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. -- ANI

According to a report released this week, green tea extract shows promise for the treatment of uterine fibroids.

The report summarized research done at the Center for Women's Health Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Meharry Medical College in Nashville. The January 2009 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology published the findings.

The team of researchers tested the effect of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on fibroid tumors (leiomyoma) in rat cells and in nude mice, in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Diseased cells were introduced into the cells and mice, which were then fed doses of EGCG in the form of green tea extract in their drinking water.

An inhibitory effect in the growth of the diseased cells was noted after 24 hours of treatment. According to an abstract of the report, the EGCG treatment "dramatically reduced the volume and weight of tumors at 4 and 8 weeks after the treatment." The team concluded that "EGCG effectively inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in rat ELT3 uterine leiomyoma cells in vitro and in vivo."

The researchers, who have focused on finding treatments for uterine fibroids, were encouraged by the results. A statement released this week noted that 40 percent of reproductive age women suffer from the disease, which can be extremely painful, even debilitating.

"If we can prove this compound is effective, millions of women can start self treatment and self management," Dr. Ayman Al-Hendy, who led the study, said in the statement. -- Amit Pathania

Green Tea Nutrients May Prevent Glaucoma

(NaturalNews) 10 March 2010
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It comes like a silent thief, gradually stealing sight and usually providing no warning symptoms in the early stages. But as the disease progresses, damage to the optic nerve grows worse and side vision can gradually fail until there's only tunnel vision left, and then no vision at all. Treatment with drugs and surgery may slow down the eyesight deterioration but there's no cure. However, new research provides evidence there's a natural way to prevent glaucoma from developing in the first place -- drink green tea regularly.

A study just published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry concludes that phytochemicals found in green tea actually penetrate deeply into tissues of the eyes. This is the first report to document how the lens, retina and other parts of the eye absorb the powerful antioxidants and disease-fighting substances found in green tea and it strongly raises the possibility that green tea can prevent glaucoma as well as other eye diseases and conditions.

Scientist Chi Pui Pang, Ph.D., of the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and his colleagues pointed out in a statement to the press that green tea contains flavonoids known as catechins that are thought to protect the eyes. But until now, there was doubt that catechins could pass through the stomach and gastrointestinal tract and end up in eye tissues. However, in experiments with laboratory rats, the scientists showed conclusively that after green tea is consumed, structures in the eye absorb sight-protecting green tea catechins.

When the scientists analyzed the eye tissues of the animals used in their study, they discovered that various eye structures had absorbed significant amounts of individual catechins. For instance, the retina took in the highest levels of a catechin known as gallocatechin and the aqueous humor (a thick watery substance that fills the space between the lens and the cornea) soaked up another green tea phytochemical dubbed epigallocatechin.

Bottom line: green tea catechins reduced harmful oxidative stress in the eyes that is linked to glaucoma and other eye diseases. What's more, the protective effect lasted up to 20 hours.

As regular readers of NaturalNews are aware, this good news about green tea is one more example of a host of scientific evidence that has accumulated over the last few years showing that drinking green tea is a powerful natural way to protect health. For example, researchers have found that green tea has the potential to prevent and treat osteoporosis and other bone diseases that affect millions throughout the world. Phytochemicals in green tea also show promise in preventing and treating serious brain disorders like Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's diseases.

Green Tea Could Help Prevent Cancer in Smokers

19 March 2010
Having a cup or more of green tea a day could help prevent the risk of developing cancer (especially in those who have no risk factors for the disease)for smokers according to a new study.

"The antioxidants may inhibit tumor growth," I-Hsin Lin, a master's degree student at Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan who presented her findings at the American Association of Cancer Research - International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer meeting in Coronado, Calif.

This protective effect was especially evident in a group of smokers who had specific genotypes that have been linked to cancer risk in other studies. Lin's team evaluated 170 patients who had lung cancer and 340 healthy patients. These patients were asked to describe their smoking habits, green tea drinking habits, and other lifestyle factors on the last five years. Genotyping was also done with the participants to see if they had any of the genotypes found to be associated with cancer risk in other cancer studies. These include IGF1 (insulin-like growth factor 1), IGF2, and IGFBP3.

Those in the study who didn't drink tea had a more than 5 times greater risk of developing lung cancer compared to those who had at least a cup of green tea each day. Those smokers who weren't green tea drinkers had that risk factor increased by as much as 13 times over the smokers who did have green tea daily. Among those that had the protective genotype the difference was even greater. Green tea drinkers who didn't have a genotype seen as susceptible had a 66% reduced risk in lung cancer over those who were susceptible. Heavy smokers had an even higher risk.

According to the findings the best way to avoid lung cancer is to stop smoking but green tea does appear to reduce risk. As many as 23% of U.S. adults are smokers.

AThe health benefits of green tea just keep adding up! A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that green tea may lessen the effects of depression for elderly men and women who drink the beverage daily. Results show study patients 70 years old and above-who consumed increased amounts of green tea-had a 44 percent less chance of feeling the blues.

Green tea contains powerful antioxidants known as catechins that can help defend against free radicals that can do damage to your DNA and possibly pave the way for heath dangers such as cancer, blood clots and atherosclerosis. But not only does it have the potential to fight heart disease and cancer, green tea may also help lower your "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, help fight obesity, as well as help prevent diabetes, stroke and dementia. -- Staff
