ISRAELIS TARGETED IN BULGARIAN BUS BOMBING

 Bombing

We are saddened and horrified by the terrorist attack on Israeli tourists visiting Bulgaria.  The explosion occurred at the Sarafovo Airport in Burgas, shortly after a chartered flight of Israelis landed and the passengers, all from a single tour group, boarded their bus.  A bomb hidden in a luggage compartment detonated and the blast ripped apart one bus while the other caught fire.  Six Israeli tourists and the Bulgarian bus driver were killed in the attack, as was the suicide bomber.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that "all factors point to Iranian responsibility for this attack," and added that "Israel's response will be severe" if this is the case. Last week, Iranian-sponsored terrorists were arrested trying to carry out an attack against Israeli tourists in Cyprus. Last January, Bulgarian authorities thwarted an attack when they found a bomb on a charter bus of Israeli tourists traveling to a Bulgarian ski resort, and Israeli authorities reportedly asked Bulgaria at the time to increase security for Israelis in the country.

This most recent attack also marked the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attack carried out by Iranian agents on the AMIA Jewish Center in Buenos Aires, that left 85 people dead.

As President Obama has rightly expressed, "These attacks against innocent civilians, including children, are completely outrageous."

Anti-Israel Ads in NY
Distort History and the Truth

As part of what appears to be a national effort to smear Israel and distort the historical record, anti-Israel ads appeared this month along NY suburban train rails.

By implying that lands pre-1946 were somehow a national sovereign Palestinian State, a casual observer could wonder how and why there was a shift from Palestine (as in a Palestinian State) to Israel.  The ad tells the story of a zero-sum contest in which the Jews/Israelis-(yes: the ad, too, makes that conflation) start with almost no land and end up with nearly all the land, while the Palestinians start with nearly all the land and end up with almost none of it. But while it is true that hundreds of thousands of Arabs lost their homes due to war and expulsion, the story the ad tells is extremely disingenuous, implying that Israel took land from a Palestinian nation state, when the reality is that the Palestinians, whose history is tragic, never had a sovereign state and were actually sold out by Arab powers who did not want them to get the state the international community and the founders of Israel agreed to create for them.

To read a balanced account of the implications presented by the ads, check out this piece in Tablet magazine.

JUST ONE MINUTE
On Friday, July 27th, the 2012 Summer Olympics will begin in London and will mark 40 years since the murder of 11 Israeli athletes by terrorists at the 1972 Olympic Games. Since then, the bereaved families have repeatedly asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to observe a minute of silence in memory.

Now a campaign led by one of those family members has attracted over 100,000 signatures to a petition asking the IOC for a moment of silence to remember the murdered Israeli athletes. A powerful CNN op-ed on the campaign has quoted Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird and Sports Minister Bal Gosal saying "The terrorist attack targeted not only Israel, but the spirit and goals of the Olympic movement...it should be marked publicly as part of the official ceremony...".

On the morning of the Opening Ceremony, July 27th, people all over the world will stop for one minute and stand in silence as a personal tribute to those who lost their lives in the 1972 Munich Massacre. Wherever you may be and whatever you may be doing, please join in and stand in silence for one minute as we remember.

There will also be a short memorial service streamed live via a webcast at 10.45am (GMT+1 / London Time).
