About the
Israel Action Update

The Israel Action Update is aimed at providing valuable information on issues of vital interest to the community around Israel.

Taking action for Israel, or advocating for Israel, first takes educating one's self about the issues of the day - and helping others better understand them by distributing information you think is valuable or of interest.

Taking action for Israel could mean educating yourself or helping your school or organization educate themselves about Israel.

Taking action for Israel could mean attending an event in the community, buying Israeli goods or contacting your elected officials about a matter of great import to Israel and the Jewish community.

Taking action for Israel could mean taking immediate action in a time of crisis or it could mean paying close attention to the issues of the day for that time when a crisis calls on you to be knowledgeable, articulate and persuasive about Israel.

Taking action for Israel is all of these things and more!

 Happy Birthday Israel!

Today, as Israel celebrates its 64th Birthday, we, in the American Jewish community, stand at the crossroads of many issues.  We are confronted with many different ways to support Israel, to learn about Israel, to experience Israel, or even to talk about Israel.  This year there are numerous reasons to celebrate Israel and at the same time, there are more and more reasons to worry about her survival.

Those who know and love Israel know her for her wonders, her contradictions, her accomplishments and her challenges.  And as we strive to think about what Israel means to us personally - at 64 - we look to moments of unity like Yom Ha'atzmaut, to help frame the conversation for the future.  There is much more that unites us about Israel than divides us and if just that can be a renewed focus for the coming year, Israel at 65 will that much more of a celebration for our entire community.

Here are additional commentaries about Israel at 64 - including a video message from Minister Yuli Edelstein, and a recounting of the declaration of independence:

Egypt Cancels the Delivery of Gas to Israel

Egypt's state-owned natural gas company said Sunday that it was ending a deal to ship gas to Israel because of a payment dispute. Israeli officials responded by warning that the termination cast a new shadow over the bilateral peace treaty.

The gas deal, signed in 2005, has become a target  in Cairo for broader resentment of the supportive relationship with Israel that was forged by Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president.
