| Tragic Shooting in France:
Alleged Gunman Shot Down by French Police
The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia mourns with the Jewish community of France and Jews around the world after a gunman riding a black scooter fired a pistol into a gathering of students and parents outside the Ozar Hatorah School in Toulouse, France.
Among the dead are a Rabbi and teacher, Yonathan Sandler, 30, who died next to his two children, Aryel, 6 and Gavriel, 3. An eight-year-old girl, Miriam Monstango, the daughter of the school's principal, died from her wounds, while several others are being treated for injuries.
Security has increased for Jewish institutions in France and will stay heightened since it was revealed that Mohamed Merah, the suspect in the murders, described himself as an "Islamist," and said he was seeking revenge for the deaths of Palestinian children, and for the actions of French military forces abroad..
UPDATE: After a 32-hour standoff, Mohamed Merah, the 23-year-old man believed to be responsible for Monday's deadly shooting, was shot in the head by French police Thursday morning as he jumped from the window of his apartment.
Merah was wanted in the deaths of seven people: three French soldiers, as well as the three children and Rabbi killed outside their school. Merah was a French national of Algerian heritage.
