Greetings!
Here we are with a bright fresh New Year full of possibilities.  Have you made any resolutions?  At our "Tuesday Morning Knitting" group, everyone was working on completing unfinished projects.  Maybe it is starting a new project that was put back in the holiday rush.  Maybe learning a new craft like felting or spinning will be your choice.  Whatever you choose, may it bring you much pleasure.

Introducing Artfelt®!
Try Artfelt®!
AF ProcessWe are excited to be able to introduce Artfelt®: a new easy way to make felt fabric.  Artfelt® paper takes the labor out of fulling by hand or knitting large pieces to wash.  Simply tack wool to the special paper in your own creative design, throw your piece in the dryer, and in a short time reveal your felt.  Artfelt® paper then easily dissolves in boiling water, leaving you with beautiful fabric.  Create lightweight felt for a warm scarf with cozy drape.  Fashion heavy felt with more layers of wool to design durable fabric for purses or hats.  Large pieces make gorgeous shawls or artistic vests.  Let the Artfelt® process open your creativity.

Try Artfelt® merino wool, dyed in brilliant colors, or use any wool roving.  I love
Frabjous Fibers hand dyed merino braids.  Add yarns, ribbons, or mohair locks for texture and design.  The Artfelt® tack board is essential to support the paper and protect your work surface.  Reach for a Clover needle felting tool to speed up the tacking process.  Artfelt® kits provide easy step-by-step instructions and yield striking, practical felted art.  See our kits below!

Class: Introduction to Artfelt
Artfelt® is a fun and easy way to create felted fabric scarves, bags, garments and lots more.  Get a hands-on overview of the technique using Artfelt's® patented paper.  Create a small project ready for felting in your dryer.

Needle Felting
Needle felting kits

A craft we love right now is Needle felting.  Using a fewAnimal Felt Book simple tools provided in these kits, you can construct a variety of fun animals.  The kits vary in skill level, so you can enjoy these projects as a first timer or as a skilled needle felter.  These are also great projects to do with kids ages 10 and up.  We carry kits from Lorna's Wool and Woolpets, as well as a variety of instructional and inspirational books on Needle Felting.

Lornas Wool Felted AnimalsLorna's Wool Needle Felting Kits feature "Felting Eggs" to keep sharp felting needles at a safe distance from your fingers.

All wool in these kits is grown and dyed by Lorna and friends, and has been carefully selected for its felting qualities.  Colorful directions are guaranteed to provide excellent project results.  These kits are great for beginners!

Woolpets Panda

Woolpets kits have a range of projects from easy to intermediate.  Using a slightly different technique, Woolpets kits teach you to construct the entire body using only wool roving, without the "felted egg" as a base.

We recommend the use of a foam pad, like Fiber Trends foam pad, to help sculpt these animals for added stability.

Handspinning
Handspinning
The beauty of unspun fibers is what Ashford Joydraws many of us to learn to make our own yarn.  From this point we need to learn how to use the tools of the trade.  The spinning wheel is a basic yet amazing tool.  To learn to use a spinning wheel requires desire to learn, good equipment and fiber, and a class or two to help one through the initial learning experience.

If making yarn sparks your interest, be sure to check out one of our spinning classes!

Can't make it to a class?  We also have a great selection of books to get you started with either wheel or spindle spinning.  Here are a few of our favorites!

HandspinningHands on Spinning by Lee Raven:

Here is all you need to know about spinning unique, beautiful, high-quality yarns for your knitting, crocheting, or weaving. With very clear directions and excellent diagrams, the author starts you on your spinning journey by simply pulling some fibers from a small hand full of wool and spinning them on your thigh. She proceeds from there to cover all elements of spindle and wheel spinning.

The Intentional SpinnerThe Intentional Spinner by Judith MacKenzie McCuin:

Offering a blend of technical knowledge, history, and easy-to-use tips, this inspiring collection of spinning wisdom deftly explores the three fundamental areas of yarn production: understanding fibers, managing yarn structure, and making yarns that precisely meet the spinner's needs. Spinners are also offered guidance on planning a project from start to finish, as well as how to care for and store completed projects.

Respect the SpindleRespect the Spindle by Abby Franquemont:

The perfect how-to book for any spinner with a growing collection of spindles or even just a dowel, Respect the Spindle includes: step-by-step photography with detailed illustrations, making the spindle spinning techniques clear to even the novice spinner; covers basic as well as specialized techniques; and five simple projects give spinners practice in creating a variety of yarns and patterns.

Class: Handspinning Drafting
Learn or brush up on the three basic drafting techniques.  Beginning spinning skills and wheel required.
