ProLiteracy America

ProLiteracy America

Greetings!

Celebrating 40 years in DuPage County....literally giving the gift of a lifetime providing one-on-one tutoring for adult learners! Our roots began in 1972 by two women who attended Gary Methodist Church in Wheaton. They started by helping one woman. Today, 40 years later, thousands of adults and their families have been impacted. Thousands of volunteers have donated their time, talent, and passion.

As we celebrate the accomplishments of the students and their tutors for our year ending June 2012, together we also celebrate a milestone in our history. Congratulations to the 26 adult learners who reached the highest achievement level and to the 74 who increased by three or more levels during the year. Thank you to all of the volunteer tutors who are continuing to literally change the lives of adult learners and impact future generations.

Student Accomplishments, Year End Results
LITERALLY RECEIVING THE
GIFT OF A LIFETIME
Pat 2010
For the year ending 2012, 545 adult learners received one-on-one or small group tutoring and we welcomed 141 new tutors! The 409 active tutors donated over 28,000 hours of volunteer time.

In FY12, a total of 311 adult learners, who received 35 or more hours of instruction, reported:

As a family member, 268 adults gained 1,727 new or improved skills such as reading to children, helping children with homework, attending school meetings, opening a bank account, writing checks, shopping, reading medicine directions, and making medical appointments. 123 of these adults are now able to describe symptoms of illness, making it safer for themselves and their families.

As a worker, 179 adults with a goal to improve as a worker gained 525 new employment-related skills such as filling out applications, interviewing for a job, reading safety information, reading work signs, and using a computer. 42 adult learners obtained employment, 12 earned promotions, three passed the GED and nine entered other training programs.

As a community member, 241 adults gained 719 skills such as getting a library card, using the library, using the post office, and talking to neighbors. 21 applied for or received citizenship and four voted for the first time.

These results show that the time invested in the life of a student does make a difference. Congratulations, students and tutors, on these wonderful accomplishments!

Homework Tips For Parents!

Homework is important for children; with parental involvement being key to their academic success. This can be a very frustrating situation for parents with limited English skills as they struggle to maintain their parental control and understand the requirements of the homework.  We find that helping their children with homework is a top goal amongst our adult learners.

There are some things that can make homework easier for everyone:

  • Talk to your learner about their children's homework and what their role is.
  • Talk about attending school meetings and talking to their child's teacher.
  • Help your learner with new English vocabulary and phrases related to their child's homework.
  • Help them navigate their way thought the various papers and information that comes home to identify what is important and needs to be acted on.
  • Talk about the homework routine and how they can help their child, although they may not understand the assignment:

Help get organized e.g. make sure child has homework supplies.

Get into a routine e.g. set a regular time for homework.

Limit distractions e.g. turn off television, limit phone calls or texting.

  • Discuss how your learner can talk to their child about homework:

Show that homework is important e.g. ask about homework each day and check completion.

Don't be afraid to use the native language e.g. ask your child what they are learning.

Let your child choose the first subject to study.

Space out the learning e.g. spread out the learning for a test, doing a little each day.

Help your child without doing the homework e.g. ask questions if you can, but remember that homework is supposed to help children learn.
