40th Anniversary

Recognition Celebration

WELCOME TWO NEW
BOARD MEMBERS!

Moeed Saeed & Melody Coleman

Moeed and his family are residents of Glen Ellyn. He is an owner and managing member of DuPage Attorneys in Oak Brook. Moeed practices law in the areas of commercial transactions and litigation. Growing up with immigrant parents who knew very little English, Moeed was inspired by their hard work, value for education, and desire to learn English to better their family's future. Moeed joined the Literacy DuPage board to help end the struggles for others who are in the same situation as his parents.

Melody and her husband, Ed, have been Naperville residents since 1989. Melody's true passion is education and literacy as evidenced by her current position as administrative librarian at the West Chicago Public Library District. She has held this position for 10 years and has been a library director for over 30 years. Melody has served on the Naperville Board of Library Trustees, the executive board of DuPage Habitat of Humanity, and on the board of directors of Girl Scouts of America, DuPage Council and many other volunteer positions. Currently, she is the president-elect for the West Chicago Rotary Club. Melody's passion and background will be an asset as LDP helps adult learners and their families.

ProLiteracy America
Greetings!

Thank you for partnering with us in 2011. We look forward to your continued partnership in 2012 as we celebrate 40 years of service!

Literacy is the key to a family's sustainability, empowering them for the future. It's not what literacy can do for people but rather what people can do with literacy.

This newsletter is dedicated to the generous supporters listed below who are empowering people for a brighter future.

TODAY, March 7, is World Read Aloud Day - read about how the staff and board are raising awareness for literacy and join in.

**Don't forget to either register to participate in The Human Race on our Laps for Literacy team on April 21, or sponsor one of the participants. It's easy, just follow this link. **

Greeting CardsTutoring Tips

A cultural activity: Greeting card match-up

Here is a wonderful hands-on activity that could provide your student/s with reading and writing practice, as well as discussion and understanding of customs and traditions in the U.S.

First collect as many types of greeting cards as you can from friends and relatives. The collection can include birthday cards, get well cards, anniversary, belated birthday, holidays of all types , sympathy, graduation, congratulations on a new job, new home, christening, new baby cards and more. Number each card on the back with an identifying number.

Then compose a worksheet asking the student/s to identify the type of card that would be appropriate for each scenario. The student/s would look through the cards and write the number of that type of card on the worksheet.

For example:

·   Your sister's birthday was last week. You just remembered.

Which card would you send? #___

·   It's Easter. Your neighbor celebrates Easter.

Which card should you send her? #____

·   Your son's kindergarten class is having a party for Valentine's Day on February 14. The teacher said he should bring Valentine cards for each student.

Which card is a Valentine card? #______
