The DuPage Community Foundation
 Community Partner of the Year

The partnership between The DuPage Community Foundation and Literacy DuPage began in 1995 with a grant from the Foundation's General Endowment. DCF has granted $47,000 to Literacy DuPage over the last 16 years, including $11,500 in the last year alone, to support their mission of providing accessible and customized tutoring in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English to help adults achieve independence.

We are deeply grateful for the long-term partnership with The DuPage Community Foundation that goes far beyond funding and appreciate their investment and faith in our program. We also thank them for their 25 years of service to DuPage County that has improved the quality of life for thousands of residents.

Accepting the award is Barb Szczepaniak, Director of Grants, The DuPage Community Foundation. "I am humbled and honored to accept this award on behalf of The DuPage Community Foundation," said Szczepaniak. "The Foundation is extremely proud of its relationship with Literacy DuPage and their mission to address needs and transform lives in our community. In the future, we hope to continue to support Literacy DuPage and their good work."

Tutoring Tips

Why Writing is Important for English Learners ...

Writing is a communication process of discovering how to find the most effective language for communicating one's thoughts and feelings. It can be challenging whether writing in one's native language or in a second language. Yet as adult English as a second language learners put their thoughts on paper, see their ideas in print, and share them with others, they find they also develop a powerful voice in their new culture. Writing also enhances language acquisition as learners experiment with words, sentences, and larger chunks of writing to communicate their ideas effectively and to reinforce newly learnt grammar and vocabulary. (CAELA: Center For Adult English Language Acquisition)

 Sharing Memories of Recipes

2011 Cookbook

In 2012, Literacy DuPage will be celebrating its 40th birthday and as part of the celebrations we would like to compile and publish a collection of learners' and tutors' best and most meaningful recipes. The collection will include a description from the learner and tutor as to why they chose that particular recipe.

If you and/or your student would like to participate and we hope many will:

o   Choose a recipe.

o   Tell one another about the recipe. "I chose this recipe because...."

o   Write down the ingredients and method of making the recipe.

o   Write what the recipes mean to you and your student/why the recipe was chosen.

o   Clarify and edit the recipes and descriptions. (Spelling should be accurate and questions asked to clarify ideas and cooking directions. The student's writing should retain their voice.)

o   Try out the recipes together if possible.

o   The recipe should be named and be classed as an appetizer, main dish, side dish, dessert or baked goods. Identify each recipe with your or your student's name.

Submit by email the recipes and writing to Lthackeray@literacydupage.org

Letter from the President

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for

ProLiteracy Americaothers and the world remains and is immortal." ~ Albert Pike

I could not help but think how meaningful this quote is for the many stakeholders in Literacy DuPage.  To the many volunteers who support our Vision and Mission from office support to serving on the board of directors.  To the full-time and part-time staff who manage the programs and key functions necessary to operate in a challenging environment.  And to the tutors who are the backbone of our programs who work tirelessly with our adult learners.  Even our adult learners are not only learning for themselves, but for current and future generations who they will influence with their improved literacy skills.

It also reminds us of an exciting milestone in the history of Literacy DuPage.  2012 will mark the 40th anniversary of the organization and we are already gearing up to celebrate the impact left by past volunteers and staff who were before us.

Between now and then, we continue to focus on increasing our presence in the communities we serve and strengthen our operational and financial relationships with partners and donors.  And we continue to train an ever-growing cadre of tutors to continue supporting our literacy programs.

As always it is a privilege to be associated with all of you who freely do for others as part of the Literacy DuPage family.  On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your continued giving and contributions to our ongoing success.

From my family to yours, have a wonderful holiday and much success in 2012.

Rick Lochner
