ProLiteracy America
Greetings!

Our partnerships have become the cornerstone of our organization. Through our library partners, we are able to reach potential volunteer tutors, hold training workshops and have private tutoring spaces. Through our community partners, we are able to reach a wider range of adult learners and offer a broader spectrum of resources to our students. Through our funding and donor partners, we are able to provide the resources for a program that literally changes lives and impacts future generations. Thank you to all of our FY11 partners!

Please join us October 8 as we celebrate student achievement and recognize volunteers. Sixty volunteers provided volunteer service for five years or more and fifteen volunteered for 200 or more hours. Seventy-seven adult learners gained more than three levels and another twenty-three reached the highest level.

This year, we are partnering with Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry on September 15 for Literally Ending Hunger Together Day!

Don't forget to shop and dine on September 15 at one of the 70 participating Naperville or Wheaton retailers donating a percentage of purchases on that day. Click here for the full list!

Help literally end hunger in our community on Sept. 15.
Student Accomplishments, Year End Results
Connecting Worlds -
Opening Doors
Fall 2011 Student Tutor Picture
For the year ending 2011, 581 adult learners received one-on-one or small group tutoring -  an 85% increase in five years. We also welcomed 181 new tutors - an all-time high!  The 425 active tutors volunteered over 18,000 hours of instruction time to our students.

In FY11, a total of 234 adult learners, who received 35 or more hours of instruction, reported:

As a family member, 216 adults gained 1,542 new or improved skills such as reading to children, helping children with homework, attending school meetings, opening a bank account, writing checks, shopping, reading medicine directions, and making medical appointments. One hundred of these adults are now able to describe symptoms of illness, making it safer for themselves and their families.

As a worker, 123 adults with a goal to improve as a worker gained 479 new employment-related skills such as filling out applications, interviewing for a job, reading safety information, reading work signs, and using a computer. Thirty adult learners obtained employment, 11 earned promotions, four passed the GED and 24 entered other training programs.

As a community member, 176 adults gained 651 skills such as getting a library card, using the library, using the post office, and talking to neighbors. 26 applied for or received citizenship and four voted for the first time.

These results show that the time invested in the life of a student does make a difference. Congratulations, students and tutors, on these wonderful accomplishments!

Celebrate Student Achievement October 8th!
 2011 Luncheon Invite
The Annual Recognition Luncheon to honor this past year's outstanding students, volunteers and partners will be held on Saturday, October 8. The celebration will begin at 12:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville.

This is a great opportunity for tutors, students, family members, friends and financial supporters to celebrate the individual accomplishments. We will also be conducting a brief Annual Membership Meeting in which all volunteers and students may vote for officers of the Board of Directors.

Tutoring Tips

'New Year' Resolutions: short and long term goal setting

Goals - Fall FY11

With summer fast drawing to a close, many of you will be starting back with tutoring your student/s or will be able to increase the hours spent together. This is a good time to take a new look at what it is that your student/s need or want to accomplish.

Are their previous goals still valid and have they made any progress towards achieving them? Do they have any new goals they wish to accomplish?

Setting reasonable, short-term goals with adult learners is important not only to the success of the learner, but also to learner and tutor retention rates. Establishing short-term goals allows participants to recognize concrete progress. Link short term goals to the related academic skills. Help the learner understand that writing a grocery list, for instance, includes inventory skills, memory skills and writing skills. Long-term goals such as landing a job promotion or a better job are wonderful, but may be distant. Achieving a short-term goal in three months or less provides the adult learner with a sense of accomplishment.

Following are a few examples of short-term goals.

  • Write a grocery list
  • Write an e-mail to your tutor
  • Call or write your child's teacher with a question
  • Read a book to your child
  • Call the doctor's office to make an appointment
  • Assist your child with a homework assignment
  • Locate and borrow a book from the library
  • Fill out a job application
