Tutoring Tips

How Much? Measuring and Describing Volume

Most ESL students come from countries where metric measurements are used. A good lesson topic could be familiarizing students with common U.S. standard volumetric measurements and their abbreviations. Check with your student if they need to become more familiar with U.S. measurements.

Collect tools and regalia such as:

Measuring cup

Measuring scoops

Cartons or bottles (cup, pint, quart, half gallon, and gallon sizes)

Solids or liquids to measure (for example salt, sugar, water, milk, oatmeal)

Show the tools for measuring volume and ask these questions:

What is this called?

When do you use it?

Why do you use it?

What units are measured with this measuring tool?

Why is it important to know how to measure?

During the discussion write the words related to measurement and put the abbreviations in parentheses next to the words. Here are some words that should be on the list: measure, pour, volume, amount, teaspoon (t., tsp.), tablespoon (T, tbs.), cup (c.), pint (pt.), quart (qt.), gallon (gal.), fluid ounce (fl.oz.)

As a final activity select a recipe together, read it and bake or cook the recipe.
