Woman tutoring

For the year ending 2010, 512 adult learners received one-on-one or small group tutoring - a 65% increase since 2006. We also welcomed 161 new tutors - an all-time high!  The 392 active tutors volunteered over 15,000 hours of instruction time to our students.

207 students who received 35 or more hours of instruction reported life skills gains:

As a Family Member, over 500 new skills such as helping children with homework, improved telephone skills, opening a checking account, understanding bills, making a doctor's appointment, or reading medicine labels were reported.

As a Worker, 23 students entered employment and 9 entered other education or training.  Over 130 skills such as completing work forms, filling out job applications, receiving a promotion, entering job training, or communicating better with peers and supervisors were reported.

As a Community Member, 18 obtained citizenship, 6 registered to vote and over 190 new skills such as using information from the newspaper, using the telephone book, using the computer or volunteering in a community activity were reported.

These results show that the time invested in the life of a student does make a difference. Congratulations, students and tutors, on these wonderful accomplishments!
Celebrate Student Achievement October 2nd!

Tutoring Tips

Repetition of  Material for Effective Learning

One of the greatest challenges for tutors of English for adults, especially at the lower levels, is to find as many ways as possible to practice the same material. What looks like boring repetition to the tutor is needed by the students as they struggle to learn. Those students who have little education background may need additional opportunities for practicing lesson material.

Some of the activities in a lesson may be of the kind that 'stretch' a student and some that are familiar and comfortable. Some activities might be familiar but with new content; others might be new activites with familiar content. There should also be a mix of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities.

These are some activities within the theme of personal information as an example, but some of these can be adapted to fit other themes or topics.

Speaking, listening

To practice personal information start off with questions and answers: What's your name? Where do you live? What's your phone number? How old are you? Where are you from? These are "set dialogue" in which answers are always the same.

Reading, writing

When a student is able to read the questions the tutor can write them on a small strips of paper and put them in an envelope. The student then takes a strip from the envelope, reads the question, answers it and then writes it down. The student can also ask the tutor the questions and if possible write down the answers.

Dictation, writing

Tutors can dictate phone numbers for practice with writing down information. The tutor can say the numbers impossibly fast to force the students to ask the tutor to repeat the numbers.

Provide the student with sentences that need to be completed:

My name is________________________

I live in___________________________

I am ______ years old.

My date of birth is__________________

And because students often need to fill out forms, it is useful to practice with a simple form such as those for magazine subscriptions.
