Accreditation!!

We are pleased to announce our re-accreditation by ProLiteracy America!

LDP places great emphasis on program effectiveness and accountability. We're the only nationally accredited literacy affiliate serving DuPage County and we're proud of our proven record of success!

A BIG THANKS TO ALL TUTORS WHO RESPONDED TO THE SURVEY!

Thank you to all of our tutors who took the time to respond to our survey asking for feedback on the tutor training and support that Literacy DuPage provides. We were thrilled that 158 of our active and past tutors responded.

While the overall results were very favorable, all of your feedback will be taken into consideration for program improvement.  We strive to provide you with the most effective training and support possible.

Announcing Helen Plum Memorial Library's New Space for Tutors and Learners!

Helen Plum Memorial Library's newly completed renovation project means the ELL collection now has space for expansion and it's much easier to browse the materials.

The Lombard library's new two-person study room and small group meeting room that seats six can be reserved for up to two hours a day by anyone 14 or older with a Helen Plum Library card or with something which clearly identifies the person as a Literacy DuPage tutor.

To reserve a room, the person with the necessary identification should call the Adult Services Department at 630-627-0316.

Our vision: "To be recognized as a leading provider of customized English literacy skills that will literally change the lives of adult learners and impact future generations" is being fulfilled.

Every day, students' lives are changed as they accomplish their goals and achieve life skills.

Together we are making a difference.

Nancy Reaches Her Goals
About Nancy and Her Tutor, Michele

When Nancy came to the Literacy DuPage program she had some big goals and never imagined that after one year of being tutored, she would have so many accomplishments!

Michele, Nancy's tutor, is a speech pathologist in a local school district. She tutors because she sees first-hand the benefits when parents understand English language well enough to help their children with school work and to communicate with teachers.

Michele and Nancy meet for their tutoring sessions Saturday mornings in Nancy's home. The fun activities Michele brings for Nancy's children keeps them occupied, but also help them with their learning skills.

Like all parents, Nancy wanted to help her children in school. As a result of Michele's tutoring, Nancy can now read to her three young children in English. Michele helps Nancy understand the notes and packets the school sends home and helps her understand her young child's homework, such as rhyming words.

Another one of Nancy's main goals was to get a job. Her higher level of English improved her employability and she now has a full-time job - doubling the family household income. Currently, she is working on strenghtening her communication skills and is being considered for a promotion.

Nancy also wanted to be able to make medical appointments for her children. Nancy can now "tell the doctor what is wrong with my kids". But the accomplishments don't stop there. She is enjoying learning how to use the computer to search for information and even pay bills.

Michele says that Nancy is a very hard worker and motivated to learn. Michele believes that tutoring is rewarding when you can see the progress that a learner makes and Nancy has made huge progress. She started as a very beginning ESL student and just recently tested at the highest level!

Congratulations, Nancy on meeting your goals.

Tutoring Tips
Summer with Your Student and Family
ProLiteracy AmericaTutoring in the summer can bring challenges. Many of our students are parents and during the summer have their children home from school. The time available for their English lessons may be short!
Here are a few activities you can do with your student and their children so that he/she is still using English.
  • Visit the DuPage Children's Museum in Naperville. Contact the LDP office for free family passes for two adults and up to 5 children.
  • Select a recipe in English that children would enjoy. Your student can read the recipe and you can all bake together.
  • Visit the local library. Find out about summer programs for children.
  • Check out your basement or garage sales for suitable board games. While away a summer hour playing in English.
  • Create a family scrap book of photos, drawings and family stories or experiences.
  • Attend the LDP picnic on June 26th with your student and family! It's at 1:00 pm at Churchill Woods in Glen Ellyn.

  WELCOMING TWO NEW LITERACY PARTNERSHIPS!

We welcome the Plainfield Library as a new library partner. At the request of the library staff, who recognized the need for accessible and customized tutoring for their constituents, we will hold a tutor training workshop for Plainfield residents in July.

We are also very pleased to announce a partnership with JUST of DuPage. JUST of DuPage is a non-profit organization serving inmates at the DuPage County jail. Tutors are being trained to help inmates improve their reading and writing. The goal of the collaborative programs will be to help inmates with their literacy needs in order to obtain and retain employment and to empower them to make positive changes in their lives.
Please visit literacydupage.org to learn more about all of our Letters for Literacy Partners! They are helping support us - please support them.
