1321 West New Hope Drive - Officially Ours on 8/30

Greetings:

Riley and Debi Prepping for Photo
Our Forever Home project is moving at a rapid pace now that we are less than a month from closing.  The most significant event of the past month has been securing financing through Frost Bank. They are an absolute joy to do business with.  A land/construction loan to a young non-profit is not easy or common.  They have walked us through each step and have been extremely receptive to setting up a note that we can handle both during the construction phase and long term.  I suspect I will sound like a commercial, but "they listen".  We are scheduled to close on August 30th.

Our goal is to finance the land and then build the Training and the Dog Care/Job Skills Lab Buildings with donations only.  This strategy will put us in a good position to really make an impact on the community once we have finished building.  So far, everyone we have

Riley ready for Ground Breaking

contacted has been extremely supportive and generous.  We have received donations for many aspects of the project - landscaping materials, floor tiles, excavation, construction management, lighting, datacom, audio/visual equipment, blue print printing, electrical work, labor for tile installation, and many more.  This is a project being built by average families and businesses in our community, for our community.  I feel honored to be a part of it.

If you want to be a part of this inspiring project, we need cash donations for those items that cannot be donated by businesses (closing fees, surveys, environmental impact studies, permit fees, water connection fees, down payment on the land, etc.), and the following:

*  Structural concrete

*  HVAC - heating and cooling units along with the associated duct work

*  Two large garage doors

*  Irrigation system

*  Plumbing supplies and or installation

*  Stone veneer for the exterior and or installation

*  Roof materials and or installation

We are offering sponsorship packages for donations of $10K and higher that include naming rights to the job skills lab, the parent comfort center, the pre-school classroom, the playground, the agility field, dog park, the sensory garden or the adoption kennel.  Sponsorships also include other marketing perks. Please contact me or our capital campaign manager, Jan Byrum for more information.  Let's talk about partnering to better our community.

Ground Breaking Celebration and Reception - Mark your calendars and plan to join us on Thursday, September 13th at 6 PM at 1321 West New Hope Drive in Cedar Park for our ground breaking celebration.  Of course, kids and dogs are welcome to attend.  We will break ground then enjoy refreshments as we celebrate this milestone.

Summer Camp - Our last two sessions of summer camp will take place next week.  Tricks, Games and More for campers ages 10 - 14 and All About Dogs! for campers 7 - 9 years old.  It has been a really fun summer.  We had the pleasure of working with some amazing kids.  Summer camp embodies the true feeling of Austin Dog Alliance - fun, learning, finding acceptance from peers, building self-esteem, learning to be responsible and caring towards animals, making friends and learning all about the positive treatment of dogs.  Thank you to the many businesses (Lakeline Animal Care, Williamson Country Regional Animal Shelter, Mud Puppies, Candlelight Ranch and Suni Afghans) and all the staff and volunteers that make summer camp possible.

Dog Training Classes - We have a full schedule planned for fall.  Check out our schedule and go back to school with your dog.  Having a well trained dog is such a joy in life - don't miss out.  Take some time to train with us.

K9 Club Autism/Asperger's - We have expanded to include young adults interesting in pursuing careers with dogs.  We will now offer classes on Tuesdays for ages 8 - 9, Wednesdays for 10 - 14 and Thursdays for 15 - 21.  All three sessions include a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, dog trainers and a team of therapy dogs. Classes start the week of September 17th.  An application is required prior to enrolling, so please start the process now to ensure a spot.  We sold out last semester, so please don't wait until the last minute.

Photo Shoot - Thank you Joe Bland Constrution for letting us do a photo shoot on your front loader.  It was so much fun!  Look for our photos on Facebook. Lots of ADA dogs came to have their photo taken on the equipment.   Thank you Joe and Mike.

 Sincerely,

We're closing on our site property at the end of August!

Help us build our new Forever Home and honor your pet with a permanent tile on our Supporters Wall.

  • Do you know someone on the autism spectrum who would benefit from canine-assisted therapy?
  • Do you support the need for job- and social-skill training programs for special-needs learners?
  • Would you enjoy a beautiful environment to learn and practice agility and other outdoor sports with your dog?
  • Do you know a child who would benefit from canine-assisted reading programs?

Donate to Austin Dog Alliance and honor your dog, your family, your business, or someone close to you with a tile on our permanent Supporter Wall.  You choose a photo of your 4-legged family member, or your corporate logo, and we transform it into a beautiful tile for permanent display on our Supporter Wall.

Several levels of donation/support are available.  Read more about the project here and make your donation towards a better future for everyone in our community.
Bow Wow Reading Dogs Help Students Improve Reading Skills

Pet Therapy Team Jan and Callie
Jan Henegar & therapy dog Callie
She steals Cheerios from inattentive toddlers, jumps on the furniture when no one is looking, and darts out the door to explore the neighborhood, but 14 pound, feisty and fluffy Shih Tzu, Callie, leaves all the "scallywag" behavior at home when it's time to visit her students in the Austin Dog Alliance (ADA) Bow Wow Reading Dog program in the Leander Independent School District.  Callie's handler and ADA Pet Therapy Team volunteer, Jan Henegar, says, "
Once I put her vest on her, she knows that she is working and is very excited!"

READING AND RELAXING

For 15 minutes a week, students in the ADA Bow Wow Reading Program sit next to Callie and read. The students may read below grade-level, have trouble reading aloud, or experience some other reading challenge, but each one only cares about getting their one-on-one time with sweet, smiling Callie.

Researchers have found that simply being around dogs can lower people's blood pressure and slow heart rates, generally reducing anxiety. Students who struggle with reading are aware that their reading skills aren't equal to their peers, which can create a vicious cycle of anxiety that strikes anytime they approach a book. But when Callie stretches out on her stomach, or snuggles up to a student's leg, or just snoozes nearby, "the students are enjoying the experience of reading instead of dreading it".1

In fact, 2010-2011 studies at Tufts University and the University of California, Davis found that children who read to dogs experienced improvement in their reading scores and their attitudes toward reading.

CONFIDENCE BREEDS CONFIDENCE

Students and volunteers involved in the ADA Bow Wow Reading program often find their confidence strengthened.  Students sit up a little taller to scratch Callie's ears and read a little louder (to make sure Callie hears the best part).  Time spent with Callie helped one first-grader move from 50-word early readers to armfuls of chapter books, and one parent reported to Henegar that since participating in the program, "she had seen a remarkable change in [her son] at home. He was reading everything and his self-esteem had soared."

Becoming a Bow Wow Reading team can also foster confidence.  Henegar found that "if [Callie] could feel I was nervous, it made her feel the same way. If I went in talking to her, encouraging her, and praising her, she would do anything to please me!" With a positive attitude and confidence in the training she and Callie received from ADA, Henegar trusts "that Callie can learn to do anything."

PERSISTENCE PAYS

For a student, reading is not a skill acquired in 15 minutes a week or even perfected in one school year. It is a lifelong process that grows with every book, every lesson, and every test of abilities. It is the same for becoming a Bow Wow Reading team. Callie was not born a therapy dog and Henegar was not an experienced dog trainer.  "[Callie] was very outgoing and full of spunk," but also very "young and exuberant!" says Henegar. In fact, the first time Callie and Henegar took the Pet Partner's evaluation at ADA, they did not pass the level required for the Bow Wow Reading Program. But after six months of encouragement, focus and practice, they passed successfully and have been helping students for the last six years.

THE COMMUNITY CARES

The demand for more Bow Wow Reading dogs in Austin-area schools and libraries is evidence that students, teachers, librarians, and parents have seen results with the ADA Bow Wow Reading Program. Every school that currently has a program, across six districts, has a list of teachers wanting their own Callie to help their students. Fifteen schools are waiting just for a chance to see their very first furry friend in an ADA Pet Therapy vest.

The hours Bow Wow Reading Program volunteers spend training, preparing, traveling, and reading is generously donated time. But the professional training classes, Pet Partners testing, and administrative aspects of the program require funding.  If you want to send Bow Wow Reading dogs to more schools, please consider making a secure online donation to Austin Dog Alliance.  If you want to turn yourself and your friendly pet into a Bow Wow Reading team, learn more about the pet therapy training program at Austin Dog Alliance.
