Greetings:
 | | Teen Lizzie Rhoads Making a Difference With a Reading Dog |
My name is Chris Rhoads, and my 16-year-old daughter Lizzie and I are proud to be Austin Dog Alliance volunteers. We love working with them.
How could I not love an organization that builds up the self-esteem of my daughter? Middle school and high school are much meaner places than they were when I attended (especially if you have any kind of disability, or can't handle sports). The Austin Dog Alliance Youth Association grants my sweet girl a place where she can shine. They taught us how to train our dogs, and a well-behaved dog is almost as good as a well-behaved child!
The training classes alone are better than hours watching situation comedies. (If you haven't been to one, you are missing out on some real fun.) It was through one of the training classes that Debi Krakar identified our knuckle-headed Brittany Spaniel as a good candidate for a therapy dog. After a few more Alliance training classes, my daughter and my dog qualified as a pet therapy team.
The work my daughter does going to nursing homes and libraries with our therapy dog redeems many of the hurts she has felt from the world. Her best friend has now joined the Youth Association, too. She came to a meeting and heard about how they are serving children with autism. Her brother has autism, and I think she was amazed to find a place that valued and understood autism so well.
Another thing I notice about Austin Dog Alliance is that it brings together folks of different ages, cultures, and religions. There's just something magic that happens when people work together with dogs or for the benefit of the people who need them. I highly recommend it.
And so it was easy to open up my checkbook when I realized that the organization would need funding in order to be able to embrace more folk that want the joy of working with dogs, and help more dogs that need training and homes. Sometimes you just have to make the world a better place.

Forever Home Construction Project Update - With help from our friends at the Autism Society of Greater Austin, this month we were able to nail down some of the upgrades we will include to make our new home very autism-friendly. Designing and building facilities to accommodate those with autism is a cutting edge process and we are honored to be at the forefront of this movement. Big Red Dog Engineering is about 2 weeks out from submitting our site plan to the City of Cedar Park.
If you are considering a donation, now is the time. Our bank is wanting us to have at least $250,000 in cash in the savings account by the end of the month. Although we are super thrilled with all the multi-year commitments and in-kind donations of labor and materials that we have received, bankers want CASH. We still need $200,000 to meet their requirement for this stage of the process. We are looking for supporters to sponsor/name the following: Training Center ($100,000), Agility Field or Dog Park (50,000), Sensory Calming Room on the Training Floor ($25,000), Sensory Calming Reading Alcove ($25,000), Veterinarian Assistant Job Skill Training Center ($10,000) and Puppy Room ($10,000). Contact me for more information about being involved in this community changing project.
For supporters who would like a photo of their dog on a tile on our Training Room wall, the minimum donation is $100. For kids of all ages that would enjoy painting a tile for our Training room wall, the minimum donation is $50. The next opportunity to paint is at the Bark-e-que Party at our new Property. Come see what we are creating!
Summer Camp - Starts on Monday, June 4 with our Advanced Tricks, Games and Puppies session for typically developing students. Thank you to our partners at Mud Puppies and the Williamson Country Regional Animal Shelter.

KEYE news anchor Judy Maggio followed pet therapy teams on visits to Dell Children's Medical Center. The story also included a visit with Austin's Meals on Wheels and More and their PALS (Pets Assisting the Lives of Seniors) program. |

Jennifer McIlwee Myers, autism/Asperger's author
Comments on use of dogs in social skill training
|
It's a "no-brainer."
Noted author on autism and Asperger's, Jennifer McIllwee Myers, supports using dogs to teach social skills.
Jennifer McIllwee Myers, author of How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger's, is very much in support of using dogs in social skills training for children on the autism spectrum. Myers has yet to visit Austin Dog Alliance personally, but she was asked her thoughts on the Alliance's K9 Kids-Autism class approach, which uses trained therapy dogs to teach social skills to children on the autism spectrum. "People on the autistic spectrum often get their greatest lessons in caring and connecting through time spent with animals," said Myers, who also co-authored Asperger's and Girls. "Bringing dogs into the social skills classroom is a no-brainer that should have started long ago." Note: We are now offering a special summer session of our Social Skills program. Register today! We will also host a Parent Night Out/Fun with Dogs evening on Saturday, June 16 from 6:30 - 9:30. This will likely sell out, so register today. |

Save a Life - Foster an Adoptable Dog!
|
We need fosters!
Austin area shelters are taking in dogs at an alarming rate. We want to help our community partners, but to do so we need your help.
ADA needs fosters so we can pull dogs from shelters like Austin Animal Center, Willia mson County Regional, Bastrop and Lockhart.
If you've ever considered fostering, now is the time!
Our foster program provides all the help you'll need to provide a temporary home for a deserving pup. Learn more about our Foster Program here. You can save a life!
To see the dogs currently in our foster program that are available for adoption, see our Adoptable Dogs page.

Parents' Night Out / Kids' Night Out - June 16
|
Our first "Parents/Kids Night Out" for families with kids on the autism spectrum was such a success, participants were asking when the next night out would be scheduled, even before they left that first event.
Our next Night Out is scheduled for Saturday June 16. Space is limited, sign up now!
This event is open to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their siblings, ages 8 - 13.
The evening will feature time with therapy dogs, movies, games, crafts and snacks. Snacks are gluten free.
(Note: For the safety of our volunteers, participants and our therapy dogs, this event is not suitable for children with aggression issues).
Very special thanks to the Austin Dog Alliance Youth Association for their support of this event!

Pet Therapy News
| Bow Wow Reading programs are winding down as the school year is coming to a close. We have a waiting list of schools that would like to have a team for the next school year. Stay tuned for news on a work session in August for new pet therapy teams interested in Bow Wow Reading.
This is a rewarding experience for everyone involved; research supports the findings that reading to a dog improves a child's reading skills.
If there's a school or library near you where you'd like to volunteer, contact Kathleen (kathleen@austindogalliance.org). Next year's assignments are already being prepared! Literacy has a profound impact on a child's future and long term consequences for the future of our society. Make magic happen with your therapy dog!
For more information on training to become a pet therapy team, read about our Pet Therapy Training Program.
