Letter from the Executive Director

Debi & Levi

Happy New Year Fellow Dog Lovers,

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!  We are ready for all the fun and excitement of 2011.

The ADA team has been busy working on the curriculum for new classes and seminars, piloting a new program designed to help families with special need kids adopt a suitable dog, planning events and writing grant applications so that we can sustain and grow all our community programs.

We are kicking off the new year with a full schedule of dog training classes, new sessions of our K9 Kids Club, a New Puppy Seminar, Adopting or Fostering a Shelter Dog Seminar and a Pet Therapy Seminar.  Click Here to see all the details.

Demand for pet therapy teams is growing at a rate faster than we can meet.  If you love meeting new people and you have a super friendly dog that loves all strangers and is fine around other dogs, please consider training for our pet therapy program.

Another opportunity to volunteer is to foster a dog in your home.  We strive to select dogs that are friendly with other dogs and have the temperment to live in homes with kids.  The selected dogs typically need basic manner training, but their underlying termperment is solid.  One of the advantages of fostering is that your own dog develops really nice dog manners.  It's also very rewarding to match the dog with a new family and to watch the sheer joy on their faces when they take their dog home for the first time.  Please contact us if you would like more information.

Sincerely,

K9 Kids Club - Afterschool Program

Apply now for next sessions, beginning January 10 & 12, 2011

k9 kids logo Austin Dog Alliance is proud to offer two versions of our popular K9 Kids Club

 1. Kids Club - Autism/Asperger's Social Communication Enrichment Program is designed for children, grades 5-9, with very high functioning autism/Asperger's. The ideal candidate loves dogs and would benefit from socializing in a "club" where the activities center around dogs.  From a kid's perspective, it's a fun class, working hands-on with a variety of dogs and learning from trainers, vets, groomers and breeders. From a parent's perspective, it's a social skill development program that your child will enjoy.

2. K9 Kids Club is designed for typically developing children, grades 4-6, who love dogs. Each week we explore different dog-related topics with speakers who are experts in their field.

Activities for both programs include:

- Presentations and demonstrations: Travis County Search and Rescue,  Veterinarian, Groomer, Service Dog Owners, Rescue Groups

- Dog-themed hands-on projects:  Painting dog bowls, making dog-shaped picture frames, making tug toys, and building a dog first aid kit

- Dog-included games: Relay walk (with an egg on a spoon while holding the leash), dog Jeopardy

- Agility: Learning how to run the dogs through an agility course

- Dog training and care: Learn how to communicate with the dog thru body position, facial expression, eye contact, touch, tone of voice, hand signals, food lures and the clicker

 - Walking field trips: Highway 620 Animal Clinic and Mud Puppies Dog Wash

Volunteer Spotlight
Colleen & Bogey Colleen Kawamura wears an assortment of hats at Austin Dog Alliance.  If you've adopted one of our dogs, been to a puppy meet-and-greet, attended an ADA event, or had gifts wrapped at our recent fundraiser at Lakeline Mall, chances are you've seen Colleen.  Colleen owned a pet-sitting business in Washington state before relocating to Austin.  After considering volunteer opportunities in the area, Colleen found that ADA was a match for her skills and interests. She currently serves as Adoption Application Manager - Puppies, but Colleen has played an integral role in many ADA activities since joining the ADA volunteer team in 2007.  When she's not at the ADA Training Center, managing all the elements of the puppy adoption process, or participating in an ADA event, she shares a home with her husband and Bogey, an Australian Cattle Dog mix.
