Summer 2011
Field season is upon us!
As we inch ever closer to beginning construction, NEON staff are moving to the field to develop and hone processes and protocols for data collection.  Techs from NEON's terrestrial biological team recently participated in extensive training and are currently testing plans for ground materials collection at the Central Plains Experimental Range (CPER) in North Central Colorado.  To read more about current activities going on at CPER, click HERE.

The Critical Job of NEON's Calibration & Validation Lab

Cal Val use

For a project as massive as NEON, calibration and validation pose an enormous technical challenge.  NEON has to vouch for millions of measurements made with thousands of sensors over the next 30 years. Each NEON sensor must be calibrated and validated each year to ensure that it is collecting data as consistently and accurately as possible.

New NEON Science Office Will Focus on the Future of Continental-Scale Ecology
The NEON corporation welcomes a new office that will focus on developing the field of continental-scale ecology and ensuring scientific excellence at NEON.  The NEON Science Office (NSO) will be responsible for addressing strategic science objectives and will lead collaborative efforts to engage and prepare the scientific community to make best use of the NEON observatory as a resource. Dr. Dave Schimel, who served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) during NEON's successful planning, design and review process, will lead the NEON Science Office in his new role as Chief Science Officer (CSO).

NEON Celebrates Key Milestones With Community Events

Ribbon cutting
Ribbon cutting at NEON HQ, May 2011

NEON recently celebrated a move into its new HQ building with a Ribbon Cutting celebration held in collaboration with the Boulder Chamber of Commerce.  U.S. House Rep. Jared Polis honored NEON by cutting the ribbon, and a driving rain did not keep 150+ guests from attending the event.  After brief remarks from Rep. Polis and the ribbon cutting, guests were invited to participate in guided tours of the building, followed by a mixer over food and drinks.   >Pictures and more information

NEON held its first community event in conjunction with the completion of a prototype site in Sterling, CO, in late April.  The event was held in partnership with Colorado State University (CSU), and approximately 60 staff, locals and interested partners attended.  The prototype site is located on a farm owned by Gilbert and Violet Lindstrom, who have been long-time supporters of scientific and agricultural research on their property. The farm also hosts a CSU-owned monitoring station. Data collected by both NEON and CSU will contribute to scientists' understanding of agriculture management strategies to cope with drought and help us better understand the interaction between agriculture and existing ecosystems.   >Pictures and more information
Call for nominations for the NEON Aquatic Working Group

The NEON Aquatic Team will soon establish an Aquatic Technical Working Group (ATWG).  This group will provide expert opinion, input, and feedback to NEON in support of design, construction, and operability of the NEON Aquatic Program.  The ATWG will provide a bridge to and a conduit for input from the broader scientific and technical aquatic-science communities.  ATWG members are nominated by their peers or self and are selected on the basis of their expertise and a desire to adequately represent the wide range of disciplines currently included in the NEON Aquatic Program.  More information on the ATWG can be found HERE.

If you or your colleagues are interested in participating in the working group, please complete and submit the Nomination Form  to  Dr. Heather Powell, or contact her if you have any questions.
