Climate Science Day on Capitol Hill
|
Outline. NEON, Inc. would like to announce an opportunity for up to five individuals to engage in a training session on communicating with Congress (February 16, 2011). This will be followed by a visit to Capitol Hill (February 17) to meet with your legislator and other Members of Congress in multi-disciplinary teams led by representatives from organizing institutions (see "Who" below). NEON, Inc. is looking for individuals to effectively communicate the impacts of large-scale environmental changes on natural resources and the complex interaction between climate and ecosystems. Limited travel assistance is available. Early career scientists are encouraged to apply.
What. A non-partisan opportunity for scientists of many disciplines to inform Members of Congress on the state of climate science. The purpose of the visit is to provide Members of Congress the best possible access to scientific information. This event DOES NOT subscribe to any particular policy course or action. As such, Federal employees may participate in this event.
When. Participants should plan to fly in on the morning on February 16. The training session will be conducted on the afternoon of the same day. The Hill visits on February 17 are expected the last the entire day with visits to multiple offices. This event is held in advance of the AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, DC which starts the evening of February 17.
Who. Participating organizations include American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, American Geophysical Union, American Meteorological Society, American Society of Agronomy, American Statistical Association, Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea (COMPASS), Crop Science Society of America, NEON, Inc., Soil Science Society of America, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, and others.
Why. The 112th Congress has many new Members and new leadership, making it an opportune time to put a face on climate research with Members of Congress and their staff.
How to apply. Applicants must be associated with NEON, Inc. member institutions in good standing. Please send an email to Brian Wee with the following information by Friday December 31, 2010:
- Name
