September Poll Results

We asked if you train forklift operators "in house" or if you contract outside trainers.

The results were 50-50. Half of our readers train "in house" and half contract trainers.

Safety Center Workplace Safety can help with both!

If you need forklift training, call us at (800) 825-7262 x 219

Improving Safety Training Techniquesimprove
Effective training requires more than just a video and a story or two. To convey important information to your workforce, there are multiple factors to take into account, especially age, generation, learning styles and experience.

Understanding Adult Learning Styles

People learn and retain information differently.

  • Kinesthetic learners
    • Need to touch, manipulate and directly engage in the activity to learn and retain information
  • Auditory learners
    • Learn best by hearing the information
  • Visual learners
    • Need to see the information to understand

MultigenerationalMost people are some combination of learning styles. To increase engagement and retention, mix up different teaching styles.

In addition to learning styles, age and cultural background affects the way students engage. Older workers may engage more positively with traditional classroom type environments. Younger workers want to be able to find out more information on-line; they expect a quicker pace and incorporation of media. Mix up delivery styles to keep all generations engaged.

Creating Engaging Content

Content that is varied and interesting will keep your audiences' attention.

  • Use varied media and techniques to get your point across
    • Don't always rely on a video to make your point
    • Use videos as the starting point for discussion
  • Directly engage employees by having them demonstrate the correct way to perform a job function
  • Incorporate humor, games and hands-on demonstrations to fully engage all employees' senses

Encourage Mentoring

Every workplace has one or more employees who have been around "since the beginning of time." These experienced employees are a great asset to your training programs. Ask for their opinions, have them share experiences that they have had related to your topic. Ask them to mentor workers with less experience. Just make sure the worker who has been around awhile actually performs job functions safely.
