Vol 11, Issue 9

September 2011

Greetings!

Power industrial trucks are used in many different industries and applications. This month's Inside Safety will discuss the regulatory training requirements for forklifts and other industrial trucks. For more information, check out our course offerings here. Keep reading for the latest  powered industrial trucks information you can use in your own trainings.

Forklift Safety Training
Industrial Powered Trucks

Forklifts or industrial powered trucks are one of the most commonly used piece of equipment in the workplace. ForkliftWarehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing and retail stores are among the many types of businesses that make regular use of forklifts. Because they are so common in the workplace, employees may feel that they do not need specific training if they have used a powered industrial truck previously.

Certification

Under CCR T8 3668(b) & (f), refresher training and periodic evaluations are required. Operator evaluation is required every three years. To be in compliance, employers must insure that employees are authorized and trained in safe operations of all powered industrial trucks that they use for their job duties.

Training Requirements

Employers are required to provide training on powered industrial trucks before employees begin to perform work using a forklift. The training can only be performed by people who have the knowledge, training and experience to train operators. Training should be both classroom and hands-on with evaluations. In-house trainers can provide specific training and reduce costs when a facility has many operators.

Training Program Content

Powered industrial truck operators should receive training on the proper and safe operations of all trucks they will use. Operators also need to receive training on how to use the equipment safely in their specific workplace environment. Forklift lift 'certification' is not only equipment specific, but is also site specific.
