Distracted Driving - It's Not Worth It!
Smashed Cell Phone

The California Office of Traffic Safety launched its "It's Not Worth It!" campaign in April during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Cell phone use is a factor in 28% of car crashes so building a safety driving culture has become an urgent priority for workplace safety professionals.

What is the Real Cost?
Piles of moneyDistracted driving, the #1 safety issue, is a factor in making motor vehicle incidents the highest workplace risk for many companies. This makes distracted driving much more costly than the first time fine of $159 and subsequent tickets at $279. The California Highway Patrol and more than 225 local police agencies are enforcing "zero tolerance" to reduce car crashes by increasing compliance with texting or hands-free laws.
Why is it a Hazard?
Texting Car Crash

Studies show that distractions narrow the driver's focus and impair their ability to scan process and respond safely to changing traffic and roadway conditions. The National safety council has taken the stand that drivers who talk on a cell phone are distracted regardless of whether it is handheld or hands-free. There are three types of distractions:

  • Visual - Taking your eyes off the road
  • Manual - Taking your hands off the wheel
  • Cognitive - Taking your mind off what you're doing

What Can You Do?
As a Safety Professional, you can make a positive, measurable improvement in the driving safety culture at your workplace by developing a cell phone policy and using a positive approach to gain staff compliance:
