Rick Harless recently opened Drifters, a steak and catfish restaurant. Having previously owned car dealerships and mechanic shops, Rick decided to partner with a previous restaurant owner to take on a new business venture. After purchasing the building previously known as the "Breakfast Barn", Rick worked for months renovating the property and developing the concept. Deciding to take on a new area of business can be very difficult. Rick shares his thoughts on taking the leap.
What made you decide to start a business?
I started this business to take on a new challenge. I have owned several businesses before but never one in the food industry. This allows me an opportunity to advance my skills. Being a business owner fits well with my lifestyle and personality because I like the challenge of making something out of nothing. When the property became available, I did some research on the potential of the area and decided it was a great time to buy in.
How do you think you were prepared to start a business?
Having been a business owner for most of my life, I have the experience and knowledge of starting and running a business. I have seen businesses fail and succeed. All those lessons are valuable when starting a new business venture. Hard work has been the real key to any business I have owned. This time around I'm doing whatever it takes to make this succeed.
Who supported you in the beginning?
My friends helped a lot with the construction and planning by offering free labor during the renovation. My daughter has helped me with developing a marketing plan, connecting me to local resources and developing an online presence.
What are your future plans for yourself and/or your business?
I would like take the business to another level by building a stable and profitable restaurant that allows me to secure more jobs for the community. I'm looking forward to the growth of exit 11. I think there will be great opportunities there in the near future.
