Hi,

Today sucks....

When the alarm went off this morning, your waking thought was likely about a commitment to change something
starting TODAY....
i.e. your diet, your engagement to fitness, or perhaps your approach to a challenging relationship
at home or at work.

You have decided to replace at least one outdated behavioral pattern with a new one in order to create a new paradigm in your life. Congratulations for taking that on!

As exciting and positive as the change results will be, there is no sugar-coating the fact that changing habits (even bad ones) causes pain. And, until recently, you've been avoiding the pain of change because, well.....pain sucks.
And we don't like what sucks.

Rather than dismiss it or try to 'magically' rise above it with motivational New Year's quotes, I propose you actually chase it down, grab hold of it, and make love to it if need be.

In other words:
OWN THE SUCK.

Three ways to do that:

1. Understand it for what it is:

If you're feeling the 'suck' today, it means that you've hit a nerve that will take you forward. The root cause of the 'suck' is where the solution to your desired goal lies - stay there!

2. Articulate it so as to reduce its mystique:

find the words to express exactly what 'sucks'. Giving it shape and form reduces its power...
.it puts the control back into your hands.

3. Offset it for balance:
neutralize the catabolic impact on you with some type of anabolic reward. Honor the need to acknowledge and reward your agreement to own the suck. Don't be a martyr....reward yourself as often as you need to.

So, this week, as you approach the new year goals you've set for yourself................take a deep breath and repeat this mantra three times:

OWN THE SUCK.

Thanks for sharing your Second Cup with me,

Mike
