'If a resume is an obituary of who you used to be... it could be said that your new year's resolutions are a prophecy of who you will become'
Statistics show that 40%-45% of American adults make one or more resolutions, and almost 97% are never fulfilled.
So why bother to even make them?
We all want to feel good or experience less pain....this is what drives us to create a resolutions list in the first place.
What is the reason the statistics are so high (97%) for unfulfilled resolutions?
Core Energy Coaching teaches that all situations have core thoughts and feelings. These thoughts and feelings are the determining factors of why people do or do not act and, in fact, reveal one's true agenda.
As you look over your resolution list today and consider putting energy toward them or not, there's tremendous value in taking a few minutes to understand what is at the CORE of each of one on your list.
Try this: Consider each of your 2011 resolutions independently and put them through the 'Pain/Gain Model' by completing the chart below:
|
RESOLUTION: (FILL IN SPECIFICS) |
PAIN |
GAIN | |
CURRENT STATE |
1. What is missing from the current situation and why is that desired and important? |
2. How are you benefitting from the current situation? What's working now? | |
FUTURE STATE |
3. What costs have to be paid in order to make the change? What do I have to give up in order to achieve this future state? |
4. What are the benefits for the desired change and why are they important? What is in it for me ? |
For true sustainable change, the highest success odds are present when the following are in place:
1) Future state GAINS are of more value than current state GAINS.
and 2) Future state PAINS are acceptable investments (of time, money, or energy) which are more palatable than current state PAINS.
The key to this exercise is honesty and acceptance of what's really behind your resolutions. The exercise might lead you to revise a resolution....evolving it into one that more closely resonates with what's at your CORE. And,those are the ones we tend to pay attention to.
Statistics show that people who make New Years resolutions are ten times more likely to fulfill their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions.
Once you've completed the chart for each resolution, grab a cup of coffee and look at the final list ....
in what ways is it an accurate prophecy of who you will be next year at this time?
Thanks for sharing your second cup with me,
