Exactly how many ACCESS paths do you have open for communication to you? Take a moment and count them up.

Now, take an honest assessment of how frequently in the course of a typical hour, you check one or more of those paths.

We can't escape the fact that as we grow in our careers and gain leadership responsibilities, we open up more and more paths of ACCESS to us....and, our culture has accepted that 24x7x365 access has become the base level of expectation (sometimes stated, sometime just assumed).

But, exactly what is all this access for? Simply put, the ACCESS is to obtain ACCURACY in leadership....either with information, data points, opinion, direction, strategy, or approval.

A simple question:  which is more important: Access or Accuracy?

For most executives today, the answer is BOTH....they are expected to be both accessible and accurate 100% of the time.   Try as we may, though, this type of expecation can rarely be met consistently for the long haul.

There are times when attention to one or the other can get off-balance, thereby dramatically limiting our effectiveness.    A high level of accessibility can tend to limit your bandwidth to apply time and energy toward accurately fulfilling your leadership role.   Conversely, the most accurate leadership information can tend to be useless if no one on your team has access to you for that information.

Early in my career at a Five-Star seaside resort in Florida, I had the luxury of having a well-trained, elegantly mannered secretary who would screen or hold all my calls if there was an urgent business task that required my full attention.  In addition to bringing me freshly brewed coffee with an hibiscus bloom on the side (ah, the good old days), her job was to manage ACCESS to me so that I could focus my energy on ACCURACY in my job.

For most of us, the days of having that luxury are gone and we all must determine at what point we will 'hold all calls', 'shut our doors', and turn off all  ACCESS in order to focus on ACCURACY

As you think about your own personal 'brand'...which of the following statements most closely aligns with who you are as a leader in your organization or to your clients or family?:

1) You are readily accessible whether or not you are in a position to provide accurate information
2) You have limited accessibility and are known for delivering highly accurate information
3) Your accessibility is limited and varies based on whatever is holding your attention at the moment
4) Your accessibility is structured and monitored as a means of managing accuracy of information

The next time you reach for your device to check your email or text messages, take a moment to think whether your ACCESS or your ACCURACY is what is most important at that VERY MOMENT.

Think about it the next time you feel the 'buzz' in your pocket or purse.
Looking forward to our next time,
