Friday Last
The topic last Friday was the Friends of the Trail Organization which was formed in 2000. Our speakers were Ed Seger, the Executive Director of the Quincy Park District, Terry Anastas, a member of the Friends of the Trail Organization and our very own Cullan Duke, also a member of the Friends of the Trails organization. Cullan handled the introductions starting with Ed Seger.
Mr. Seger reviewed the current Quincy Park District's comprehensive plan. That plan includes the maintenance of the current properties of the Park District, the transition of the offices from Emerson Community Center to their new location at All-America Park, the completion of a portion of the Cedar Creek Trail, a plan to replace or renovate the Wavering Aquatic Center and the replacement of some shelters in various parks.
Cullan then used a power point demonstration to show the membership a tour of the Cedar Creek Trail. The goal of the Friends of the Trails is to have the trail go from the riverfront to riverfront encircling the city. This was a plan formulated back in 1946 and a concept adopted by the Friends of the Trail. The completed segment is from 12th to 18th at Bob Mays Park with the next step completing the 12th to 5th street segment. The other goal is to make sure the trails are safe and they currently have the brush cut away from the trails for easy viewing and they are wide enough to get emergency vehicles on them if needed.
Terry Anastas spoke about the funding needed to accomplish the goal. Initially, grant money was used to begin the projects but that money has dried up forcing the organization to pursue other options. It was determined that $1-million would be needed in a fund drive. The Quincy Park District agreed to infuse $500-thousand into the project, after receiving study information saying that taxpayers would not mind increasing their taxes to go to the project. That left it up to the friends of the Trails to raise the rest which they have been trying to do. So far they have raised $220-thousand and the fund drive continues. The goal is to raise the remaining money by December 31st, 2014.
Mr. Anastas commented on just how beautiful the sites are along the current trail and how the quality of life is enhanced by having such trails in our city. A very well done presentation by all three speakers. If you want more information, check out their website here .

This & That
Dues statements came out last week. Please try to get your checks back as soon as you can. Ron Fritts still looking for a location to hold the Abundance Exchange. If you know of a location please contact him. He'd like to do it in November or early December if possible. Mike Lavery led us in prayer and Vic Welper started the pledge and let everybody else finish it. Rick Gengenbacher twisted tails and was in rare form including telling us how much he likes getting his dues statement. He also told us how he works 100% for the State. 20% on Mondays, 20% on Tuesdays, etc. President Terwelp let us know that Bruce Broemmel is now in room 2016 at Blessing Hospital as he recuperates from surgery. Visitors are welcomed. Kirk Frageman made a last minute pitch to sell raffle tickets for the Quincy Art Center's Artoberfest with the monies raised going to the Smart Kids Art Mentor Program to help rejuvenate the Art programs in the Quincy Public School System. Chuck Venvertloh handled the card draw and Rick Veihl had the winning ticket but drew a 5 of spades. The pot "grows" to $200. Remember to keep the time and date of November 10th at 10am open to help walk in the Veteran's Day Parade in Quincy. We will be carrying the big flag and will need about 15 guys to do so. |
