This Friday
This Friday's guests will be new Quincy Notre Dame Principal, Mark McDowell and retired QND Principal, Ray Heilmann. Some of the older members may remember that Mark's grandfather, Dick Seifert, was a long-time member of the club, past president of the club and recipient of the Exchangite of the Year Award. Ray didn't stay retired long, as he is now working at Quincy University. Join us Friday for Quincy's finest hour! |

Friday Last
Our speakers last week were Jenny Mahoney, the Autism Director, Tara Stark, the Speech Pathologist, and Stephanie Baze, the Cross Category Teacher at Quincy Junior High School. All three did a tremendous job of informing us of what Autism is and how they work with Austistic students in the Public School System. Autism is a spectrum disorder and students with this disorder struggle with social relationships, communications, changes in routines and have repetitive behavior. Autism can be detected as early as 18 months old and early detection can made all the difference in a young person. There are 71 diagnosed students in the Quincy Public School System and are served in a variety of settings to help with their learning process. Autism is more prevalent in males than females according to studies. Right now one of the learning tools being used is through the use of iPads in the classrooms . It has been shown that iPads help the students with increased interest in learning, independence and self-esteem. With that in mind, President Perry Terwelp presented our three speakers with a check for $2000 for the purchase of additional iPads. The main goal of our speakers is to get these autistic students prepared to move into the community and become self-sufficient citizens.

This & That
Our prayer was handled by Jim Benz and the pledge was begun by Rick Zeidler who had the first two words ("I pledge") written on the palm of his hand so he wouldn't forget them. Bruce Broemmel handled the tail-twisting duties. Speaking of Bruce, he was scheduled to have surgery at St. John's Hospital in Springfield for a hip replacement Tuesday (today). Hopefully all went well. I expect a full report at the meeting Friday. During his recuperation, I suspect he will go from being happy to Grumpy. (there goes another buck). He did tell a good joke about Lawyers and Investment Brokers being thieves.
The 50-50 Card Draw winning ticket was held by Rich Zeidler but he drew the 5 of Hearts so the pot grows but still not over the $400 mark yet. Thanks to Brian Koch for handling the Card Draw filling in for Chuck Venvertloh.
Keep the time and date of November 10th at 10am open to help walk in the Veteran's Day Parade in Quincy. We will be carrying the big flag and will need about 15 guys to do so |
