JWCC Our last minute speaker was newly reinstated member Mike Elbe, the Vice-President of Student Services at John Wood Community College. Mike is from the area having played high school basketball at Central High School in Camp Point and collegiately at Quincy College. He received his Master's Degree at the University of South Alabama and has coached basketball at the University of Debuque and at John Wood Community College. He believes there are three main qualities in being a basketball coach. One is building a relationship with the player and his family. Two is constantly trying to get people to work together. And thirdly, getting players to accept their role for the betterment of the team. Mike is a huge supporter of John Wood Community College (JWCC). Mike informed us that there are 13 high schools in the JWCC District which involves 9 different counties in the area. JWCC, with 2200 students, is one of 48 Community College districts in the State of Illinois and currently ranks 9th among the 48 in graduation rates.

This & That

Jim Benz led us in prayer and Kevin O'Donnell began the Pledge. President Perry Terwelp informing us that Kirk's wife, Jan Frageman, is recuperating and our thoughts and prayers are with her. Les Sachs was presented his official reinstatement papers in a very emotional ceremony where every single eye was dry. Dan Neiman has moved back into the area and has also re-joined the club. Welcome Dan, your ceremony will be forthcoming I'm sure. President Terwelp announced that the Exchange Club's YMCA Little League Baseball team (13 and 14 year olds) went 15 and 1 this past year. President Terwelp also announced that the board donated $750 to the Smart Kids Art Mentor Program to help keep the art programs going in the schools. The newest Freedom shrine will be installed at the Quincy Mall in October. More to come on that later. Smoke on the River went well but with both co-chairs absent we will await a more detailed report at a future meeting. Only one complaint from a guy at 4th and Spring who called the cops because the Friday night band was drowning out the volume of his TV on the porch as he was watching the Cardinal game. Jim Benz filled us in on the Character Champions Seminar held at Quincy University. 170 students and 30 coaches attended the Senior High event and 130 students and 20 coaches attended the Junior High event. Vic Welper's Farmers Insurance Group made a $500 donation to the cause which saw Southeastern High School win the sportsmanship award for the Senior group and Payson win the award for the Junior group. Thanks to all involved including Jim Benz, Kirk Frageman and Jim Totsch, who was out filling food pantries during the meeting. The 50-50 Card Draw winning ticket was held by Sonny Christner but he drew the 4 of clubs so the pot grows but still not over the $200 mark yet. Oh yeah, Bruce Broemmel was the tail twister and was true to his word asking your not so humble editor for an extra buck after the joke I told the previous week. And I wasn't "HAPPY" about it either!

Quote of the Week

Complements of our speaker Mike Elbe who told a story about a coach who was playing a triangle and 2 defense with the two guarding the referees (that's right...the referees) who stopped play and asked what was going on. The coach responded he "wanted those two defenders on the two guys who were hurting us the most"
