This Friday
Our original plans to have a debate between Illinois State Senate candidates John Sullivan, the Democratic incumbent, and Republican challenger Randy Frese have been put on hold due to Senator Sullivan's announcement that he will be having surgery for cancer. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Senator as he fights this battle. On short notice we have secured our very own Travis Brown of the Historic Quincy Business District. The HQBD will be hosting the 2012 Illinois Main Street State Conference to be held in Quincy on September12th through the 14th. Travis will enlighten us on what to expect from the conference. Thanks Travis for pinch-hitting on short notice. |

Friday Last
Dan Weiman was our speaker and the topic was about his son, Ethan, who passed away due to cancer and Ethan's Rodeo which was held last weekend to raise money to help fight childhood cancer. Garry Hillebrenner introduced Dan who took us through the fight that Ethan went through suffering from Neuroblastoma. Ethan was born on August 5th, 2004 and was suffering from a leg problem in 2007 that didn't go away. After being misdiagnosed as a leg fracture and then later as Leukemia, Ethan went to St. Louis Children's Hospital where his parents were told the bad news. He underwent chemo treatments with serious side effects and seemed to rebound. When asked what wish he wanted he replied a horse, which he received in 2008 along with a red cowboy hat. He also wanted to go to Texas (because there were lots of cowboys there) and the family went to Ft. Worth to see those cowboys. At one point Ethan was declared clean but unfortunately the cancer came back. After trying experimental procedures in St. Louis and Philadelphia, Ethan passed away on June 12th, 2009, just shy of his 5th birthday. The Weiman's, trying to get on with their life after Ethan, went to Sikeston to a rodeo and the idea hit them to hold a rodeo in Quincy to raise money to fight childhood cancer. They held the first Ethan's Rodeo at the Adams County Fairgrounds in 2010. The 2010 and 2011 events raised $63,000 and last weekend's rodeo was very successful as well. |

This & That
Jim Benz led us in prayer and Chris Parker handled the start of the pledge very well (I couldn't hear him for the rest of it but I think he got through it ok). Steve Peters fleeced the flock for a buck and told a joke about the misuse of airplane glue. John Johannas brought Hans Hensler of First Illinois Bank's Branch in Decatur, Illinois as his guest. Dennis Koch updated us on National's Ocean's Campaign. This year there will be a white bucket on the table as you come in. You're asked to drop some spare change into the bucket to help the campaign. Jim Benz reminded everyone that the Character Champions Seminar is set for Tuesday, September 11th from 9am to 1:30 at Quincy University's Pepsi Arena. Jim has motivational speaker, Rob Miller and Quincy University Baseball Coach Josh Rabe lined up to speak at the event which will feature 8 to 10 schools from the area participating. Art Awerkamp asked everyone to continue selling tickets for Smoke on the River and also asked people to sign up to help out .He also revealed we have 14 teams (mostly from out of town) signed up and 47 judges ready to judge the event. Travis Brown is still looking for people to make up a team for the upcoming Alzheimer's Association's "Walk to End Alzheimers" on September 6th at Clat Adams Park. President Perry also announced the Board of Director's approved a donation of $250 for the team to present the night of that walk to the Alzheimer's Association. The Card Draw pot was worth $2416. Dave Rees had the winner number but drew a Jack of Diamonds which prompted a slew of "Jack" jokes. The winning card (Ace of Spades) was one card off of where Dave drew the card in the deck which has dwindled down to just 12 cards. Chuck Venvertloh handled the card draw. President Terwelp updated us through Mike McLaughlin, on the progress of Luke Guthrie in golf. No update on Jack Cornell. Guess Perry and Vic have to buy their Cowboy tickets.
