Steve Eighinger of the Quincy Herald Whig was our speaker with Exchangite David Adam handling the introduction. "Stevie Dirt" as he is affectionately known talked primarily about his involvement covering the Quincy Raceways scene for the Quincy Herald Whig. Steve grew up around dirt tracks in Ohio and was about to move his new bride from Quincy to Ohio when he found out about Quincy Raceways. The lure of the local race track made him decide to live here instead. A little unknown fact about "Mr. Dirt" is that he knows very little about cars as evidenced by his story of putting uneven air in his car's tires. When police pulled him over for a "bouncing" car he found out he had put some 90 pounds of pressure in one tire. Steve mentioned that it's not so much about the racing that goes on but more about the people at Quincy Raceways. He told a couple of stories relating to some of the people losing their cool and receiving "lifetime" suspensions which lasted about two weeks (I guess two weeks can be a lifetime for drivers who only turn one way). Steve is also the grandfather of baby Ella who suffered serious burns in a house fire in January in Quincy. He emotionally spoke of all the outpouring of support his family received after that fire to aid Ella and her family in a time of need. He specifically mentioned the Q.U. Women's Basketball team stopping by the hospital to visit, the racetrack taking up a collection for Ella, an older gentleman from the race track who came by his house with a cash donation in an envelope, and a business that donated $25,000 to be used as a down payment for a house after they lost their house and belongings. He also mentioned that Ella just came home from Springfield and will continue to recover with a watchful eye of her 5 year old brother, Grady. Steve related a couple of funny stories about Grady and his propensity to utter a few choice words at times. Steve also has a book out that he and David Adam collaborated on called "Dirt". It's available for $15 plus tax at the Herald Whig. It features old pictures, stories and some history of Quincy's racing scene. Bill Stalder and Vic Welper were drawn as winners of a free copy of the book. |

Ron Fritts handled the prayer and quoted the book of Genesis and the membership's likeness to Him. The right Reverend Fritts then tacked on a "really?" to end the prayer. Is there any question Ron? Travis Brown stayed up all night memorizing the first words of the pledge and got it right to start us off. Bruce Broemmel handled the tail twister duties. David Adam brought his daughter, Jamie, as his guest and it was good to see Charlie Ledbetter back with us so soon after a brief illness. Kent Anderson, chairing the BBQ Judges Class, thanked everyone who helped and announced of the 37 participants, 17 have signed up to be judges for the upcoming Smoke on the River event. Art Awerkamp announced we have a total of 42 judges and 11 teams for Smoke on the River event. Raffle ticket sales are continuing so please sell as many as you can. Tony Nutt, next year's Gus Macker Chairman, had the winning ticket but drew a seven of hearts. We were all heart-broken. Chuck Venvertloh handled the card draw. Only 13 cards left! Travis Brown is looking for several club members to join the Exchange Club's team for the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimers on Thursday, September 6th at Clat Adams Park. President Terwelp updated us on the progress of Luke Guthrie in golf and Jack Cornell who saw action in the Baltimore Ravens 31-17 pre-season win over the Atlanta Falcons.
