Friday Last
President Perry Terwelp presided over the club for an interesting meeting of football and healthcare. Exchangite Dan Brink brought as his guest, Jack Cornell of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens. Jack accepted an impromptu invitation to speak to the group about his experiences at the Ravens rookie camp last week. Jack feels he has a good chance to make the team after working out as an offensive guard, tackle and center. His versatility will certainly increase his chances. He did comment about the increased speed of the game at the NFL level. His rookie camp was filled with meetings and walk throughs. The Exchange Club is all pulling for this former QND and Illini standout to represent Quincy in the NFL. Good luck Jack!
Exchangite Bob Hays handled the introduction of our scheduled speaker, Brad Billings of Blessing Hospital, with dignity despite unknowingly having part of a napkin attached to his lip. Think its easy introing people to this club? Once the lip was cleared Brad Billings cleared his lips and began to talk about "Obama-Care" and its potential affects on the health care industry. The document in question is 1400 pages long and Brad did a great job of breaking down what was inside it. All 6200 hospitals, 700,000 physicians, and health care providers in America will be affected and it has forced Blessing Hospital to change its business model to accommodate it. The new roll will be to manage the health care of the population instead of waiting for the population to come to the hospital. In theory, hospitals will no longer be able to plan their budget the same way and the risk is that hospitals will no longer need as many employees as they currently employ as less people would be utilizing the hospital's services. Another concern according to Brad Billings was the merging of health care providers with other health systems forming a mega system. With this trend continuing, Brad sees about 14 or 15 mega systems controlling everything which would drive up costs. Also, according to Brad, this new law upheld by the Supreme Court will force the hiring of an additional 16,000 IRS agents to administer the law. That cost will also be passed on as well. Very interesting talk to say the least. Thanks Brad Billings for giving us something to think about. |

This & That
Mike Lavery handled the prayer and Exchangite of the Year,Vic Welper started us off with the pledge. Bruce Broemmel twisted tails. President Terwelp received a thank you to the club from Student of the Year, Sarah Valkamp. He also thanked John Johannes for his work on that project. Dennis Koch back from Arizona for the Exchange Club's National Convention and announced he has been elected a Trustee on the National Exchange Club Foundation Board. Way to go Dennis! 625 people attended the event which is now headed by its new President, Lou Molitor, a past visitor to our club. Mel Dillman announced that Tony Nutt will be the new Chairman for Gus Macker next year. I hadn't heard that (in 2 weeks). Mel also thanked everyone especially Kevin Curran and Vic Welper for handling busters and court sponsors, respectfully. A special thanks also went out to Mike Lavery for chairing the major sponsors committee. Mel then announced that the Gus Macker profit increased by $10,668 over last year. Great job everyone involved with Macker. Kent Anderson is chairing the BBQ Judges Class on Saturday, August 4th and he needs more people to sign up. Please ask your friends or sign up yourself. So far 14 have signed up and he needs about 30. He will also need help that day as well. Tony Nutt, on his anniversary, drew the 7 of hearts in the card draw and missed out on the pot of $1813. Guess it's an anniversary dinner at McDonalds for the Nutts. Only 16 cards left! |

Jack Cornell
Former Fighting Illini and QND football player Jack Cornell was a special guest of the club on Friday. No stranger to the Exchange Club, Jack worked as a football volunteer at Macker during his years at QND. Jack is on his way to training camp with the Baltimore Ravens, where he will attempt to make the team as a free agent offensive lineman. Good Luck Jack! |

Quote of the Week
Got two this week:
After being asked if he had won a steak eating contest by Kelly Stupavsky, Jack Cornell looked him right in the eye and said
"I have won multiple steak eating contests."
Who is gonna doubt him? And then there was Bruce Broemmel saying that he
"could kick Jack's A____". Now that I doubt. |
