Quote of the Week

"Better to be judged by 12 than carried by six."

 - A line used by our speaker, Jim Watts, as he discussed "the courage to be safe".

Point to Ponder

As President Steve Green has said a couple different times, "How about them Cardinals?"  I can't believe they won the World Series!  As probably many of you do, I consider myself a die-hard fan but I am still in shock over their two month run.  If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it.  That game last Thursday was simply crazy!  Reminded me why I love baseball.

November 4, 2011

This Friday

United Way Cheryl Waterman, Executive Director of the United Way of Adams County, will speak to us about the little-known things the United Way does in our community.  Specifically, the programs and initiatives that are focused on education, income, and health.  As a reminder, the United Way is nearing the end of their $1,111,111 fundraising campaign (which Exchangite Carlos Fernandez is chairing).  In addition, we'll welcome members of the Quincy Notre Dame High School State Champion Soccer team.  Should be another good one so please join us Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour.
This Saturday

The Exchange Club will participate in the Veterans Parade this Saturday (11/5) as we proudly carry our oversized American flag.  The lineup starts at 9:00 a.m. and is from 12th Street to 24th Street on Maine with the lower numbers at 24th Street.  We are listed as entry 6A meaning we will probably be near 23rd and Maine.

Friday After This Friday
Friday, November 11th is Veterans Day and our program that day will obviously focus on veterans.  (It will be conducted at ABVI.)  If you are a veteran, please accept this invitation to join us for the special day.  All members are encouraged to bring a veteran (i.e. parent, sibling, child, neighbor, co-worker, etc.).  If you do plan on bringing a guest, please contact Mel Dillman so he can let J.J.'s know.  Mel can be reached at mdillman5905@sbcglobal.net or 228-1208.  Thanks.

Congratulations to Lieutenant Dennis Behl of the Quincy Fire Department for being named the third recipient of the Exchange Club's Firefighter of the Year Award.  Lt. Behl is a 24 year veteran of the QFD and was recognized for this distinguished service with the emergency management services and in particular, the paramedics program.  Like the first two recipients, Lt. Behl humbly accepted the honor and recognized his peers.  Mr. Jim Watts from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office delivered the keynote address after the presentation.  Mr. Watts' comments focused on "Where the Fire Marshal's Office is Today".  Our thanks to QFD Fire Chief Joe Henning, Tri-Township Fire Chief Rick Zaerr, and the entire committee (Carlos Fernandez, Dr. Tom Klincar, Hal Broadwater, Kevin Curran, and Jim Benz) for their work with the good program.

This & That

Brother Ed Arambasich, Chaplain for the Quincy Fire Department, with the good prayer and Dick Wentura leading the pledge...  Immediate Past President Kent Anderson at the podium as both President Steve and 1st Vice President Perry Terwelp both absent...  Guests included my uncle Jerry Gengenbacher who is a retired firefighter and Michael Brzank with Rich Zeidler...  No 50/50 or tail twister for the second time in as many weeks.  Both expected to resume this week...  Nice touch by Carlos Fernandez to update the group on the Great River Honor Flight.  Saturday (10/29) marked the 10th trip to Washington the organization has conducted and the sixth this year.  If my memory is correct (because I apparently didn't write it down like I thought I did) over 300 area veterans have participated in the program.  Hats off to all the folks who have made that great program what it is...  240 days until the Perry Terwelp administration and still not cell phone...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
