Quote of the Week

"Thank you for the award.  It's good to be home."

 - A soft-spoken Dan Bowe during his brief comments accepting the Service Person of the Year award and an American Flag.  THANK YOU, Dan Bowe!

Point to Ponder

It is easy to forget just how young the men and women who protect our freedoms really are but last Friday we were appropriately reminded with Dan Bowe's visit.  I just kept staring at him thinking how young he was and how blessed I felt just to have the opportunity to shake his hand and thank him for his service.  (I know many of you felt the same way.)  God Bless all our servicemen and women as well as their families!

This Friday

Firefighter Please join us as we return to ABVI for the 3rd Annual Firefighter of the Year award and program.  After the prestigious award is presented, we'll hear from Mr. Jim Watts, Senior Policy Advisor to the Illinois State Fire Marshal.  Mr. Watts is a Vietnam War Marine Corps Veteran and in his capacity, provides strategic policy guidance and development for the agency programs which include the Arson Division, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety, Elevator Safety, Fire Prevention, Homeland Security, Information Services, Personnel Standards and Education, Petroleum and Chemical Safety, Public Education, Special Projects and Technical Services.  Please join us Friday for Quincy's Finest Hour.
Road Trip Friday Last

Wow!  What a treat to visit the beautiful new Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Crops Community Center.  The RJKCCC is certainly a fitting location for our newest Freedom Shrine (located on the lowest floor near the pool) which was dedicated during the visit.  Better yet, what better guest to have with us on the special day than Dan Bowe, our Service Person of the Year?  President Steve Green took care of some quick business before handing it over to Americanism Chairman Art Awerkamp who recognized Dan, officially dedicated the Freedom Shrine, and then introduced Major Dan Jennings from the Salvation Army.  Major Jennings gave us an overview of the RJKCCC before offering tours.  Certainly one of our Finest Hours!

This & That

Jared with the good prayer and special guest Dan Bowe leading the pledge...  Lots of guests:  Good friend and mentor Michael Eden with Jim Benz; Mike Broadwater with dad, Hal; former Exchangite Charlie Doane with Dick Wentura; Linda Rull and Michael Brzank with Rich Zeidler (Linda is his sister-in-law); Mike Poland with brother, Dave; and George Scholz with Kirk Frageman...  With our special guest, Dan Bowe, were his parents Jim and Sue...  No 50/50 or tail twister on the road but President Steve did remind us that help would be needed to carry the American Flag at the Veterans Parade on November 5th...  In case you didn't know - The Freedom Shrine is a collection of historic American documents reproduced and attractively displayed with the purpose of reminding all Americans that their freedom is a result of the hard work and determination of our forefathers.  The freedoms we enjoy must be cherished and protected.  (Those are statements taken from the "Facts about the Famous Freedom Shrine" that Art Awerkamp made available last Friday)...  GO CARDS!!!  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
