Quote of the Week

"She prefers him here!"

 - Art Awerkamp's quick comment to those inquiring why Sonny Christner was having lunch with us instead of his bride, Rita, on their 55th anniversary.  Funny stuff.

Smoke on the River Meeting Thursday (8/11) Night
 Blue Pig Reversed

Please join us for the next Smoke on the River meeting this Thursday night,  5:30 p.m. at The Dock.

This Friday

 Skydive

We'll welcome South African native Charles Whitcomb to the podium to speak to us about skydiving and living out your "Bucket List".  Charles has over 3,000 jumps to his credit and is a certified tandem instructor.  An interesting gentleman with several unique life experiences.  You'll not want to miss this one!

Friday Last

A most interesting program on the history of the Knights of Columbus BBQ courtesy of Bill Anderson.  Curious of that history, Bill came up with the thought of capturing it on paper.  After a great deal of reading, research, and over 100 interviews, Bill was able to put together a small book on the BBQ (which will be conducted for the 70th time this weekend).  Published locally by PAM Printers and underwritten by the Knights of Columbus, all current KC members get a free copy of the book and others may purchase for $5.00.  Gary Peters with the good introduction.

That's a Winner
Ace of Spades

Congratulations to Daron Duke who drew the Ace of Spades last Friday and received a $1,235 check for his good luck.  Good for you, Daron!  Being the good family man he is, I'm sure Daron and his beautiful wife, Julie, have already put that money to good use.  We'll start the 50/50 Ace of Spades drawing over this Friday.  $200 pot to start.

Smoke on the River BBQ & Blues Fest

Blue Pig

Co-Chairman Art Awerkamp provided these details:

  • Keep selling tickets; they are an important part of our fundraising efforts
  • Sponsorships are obviously another important part of the fundraising.  We have lost a couple sponsors from previous years and could use your help in finding suitable replacements.
  •

Sign-up sheets for labor during the event will be out soon.

Smoke on the River Raffle Tickets

Thanks to the outstanding organizational efforts of Gary Peters, we'll have a little fun with the Smoke on the River raffle tickets.  Each Exchangite has been assigned to one of the four teams below and has been asked to sell a minimum of six tickets but encouraged to sell more.  Turn your ticket stubs/money in to the team captains.  They can provide you with additional tickets.  We'll have our first team ticket update this Friday.  These are the team captains and their team names:

  • Jeff Dorsey - Large K-9 Kommandos
  • Jared Haugh - Team Haugh, What are They Smoking?
  • Curt Moore - Moore's Ticket Horrors
  • Rick Gengenbacher - Smoking & Joking All Night Long

This & That

Jared Haugh with the good prayer and Art Awerkamp leading the pledge...  Nice crowd last week...  Travis Brown reminding everyone about the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer's.  The event will take place on Thursday, September 1st.  6:00 p.m. start at Clat Adams Park.  Contact Travis if you are interested in participating...  Time is running out for you be a part of the big anniversary party.  See details above...  As mentioned, Daron Duke won the 50/50 and Jared Haugh twisted tails...  Several references to Viagra last week from the rambunctious crowd...  Look for President Steve Green to give us an update this Friday on actions taken during the August 8th Board Meeting.  For those of you who do not know, the Board meets the second Monday of every month, 11:45 a.m. at The Pier.  All Exchangites are welcome to attend...  Also look for President Steve to provide detail about an event we will be involved with on Sunday, September 11th at City Hall marking the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  Hard to believe those attacks were a decade ago.  Like all of you, I vividly remember that day...  Months away yet but we will administer a Special Olympics Basketball Tournament on Sunday, December 11th at Quincy University...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
