"Yes, but this time don't bend over."
- Gary Peter's comment to Mel Dillman after Mel inquired about a "casual dress" for the 65th/100th Anniversary Celebration. The thought of Mel in a dress; let's not go there... |

| Smoke on the River Meeting Thursday Night | |
Smoke on the River BBQ & Blues Fest Committee will meet on Thursday evening, July 28th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Dock. All Exchangites are welcome to attend. |
| This Friday | |
We'll hear from the Quincy Family YMCA's Deb Bruce and JoAnn Voss about the Kids Fit Zone. The YMCA broke ground on the $370,000 project back in early April and hope to complete the 2,280-square-foot addition in August. The Kids Fit Zone targets childhood obesity. It will feature interactive fitness equipment and a classroom for nutritional counseling. Sounds like a good thing. Join us Friday at ABVI to learn more about the Kids Fit Zone and to have a little fun at Quincy's Finest Hour. |

A pleasure to have Kenny Blum and Jim Wood from Ameren Illinois with us. The two addressed the power company's restoration efforts after the June 27th straight line wind storm. Ameren Illinois had over 750 "resources" in the area within minutes, hours, or days of the storm. Resources included over 450 linemen, nearly 100 foresters, between 30-50 logistical staff, and another 50-100 field engineers. Approximately 70%-80% of Ameren Illinois customers in Quincy and the surrounding areas were without power at some point following the storm. A great job by all those resources to restore our power! |

| Smoke on the River Raffle Tickets | | |
Raffle tickets for Smoke the River will be handed out this Friday; another great reason to attend other than the speakers and the 50/50 Ace of Spades pot. We are asking each Exchangite to sell or buy six tickets which will in turn generate at least $20 each for the cause. For every six tickets you sell, your name will be entered in a drawing for $250. Like last year, the club will be divided into four teams in a friendly competition. Captains will be Jeff Dorsey, Jared Haugh, Curt Moore, and your humble editor. Not sure how teams will be picked but if you don't plan on selling many tickets, may I suggest your request to be on the Dorsey, Haugh, or Moore teams. Should be fun! |
| 65th/100th Anniversary Celebration | | |
Sign-up sheets for the Celebration of the Club's 65th Anniversary and National's 100th Anniversary have been out for the past two weeks. Chairman Gary Peters invites you and your significant others to join us at the Quincy Boat Club on Friday evening, August 19th. Gary promises a good time and says it will not be a real structured program (in other words, it will not be some stuffy ceremony). Casual dress is in order so please put your name down in the weeks to come. |
| This & That | |
Rev. Ron Fritts with the prayer and seeking a special blessing for Emlea Veihl, daughter of Dan and Chris Veihl. Emlea was injured in a mule (four wheeler) accident on July 11th. In the 10 days that followed, she had four surgeries. Please keep Emlea, Dan, Chris, and the entire Veihl family in your thoughts and prayers... Dick Wentura getting the Pledge of Allegiance started in fine fashion... Rev. Ron mentioned the Sunday after Smoke on the River there will be Holy Smoke on the River. Wasn't sure if he was joking or not and didn't have time to investigate. Perhaps more on this later... Rick Veihl telling us about tickets for the Quincy Volunteer Emergency Corps fundraising effort. A great group that provides a valuable service on the river... President Steve Green telling us about a new committee called the Gus Macker Major Sponsor Committee. Mike Lavery will chair the committee whose sole function will be to work with existing major sponsors and seek new ones. President Steve makes a great point telling us that it is just as important WHEN you ask as to WHO you ask. This lifts a heavy burden from the Macker Chairman. Speaking of Macker Chairman, still looking for someone to step forward in 2012... Frank Hays had the right 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong card (jack of spades) so the pot grows. Should be over $1,200 with only 16 cards left... Bruce Broemmel twisting tail with help from Sonny Christner. Sonny told us a great story about Rich Howell and his wife watching TV. Not necessarily true but certainly funny... Rick Veihl the winner of a small Mag Light from the Ameren guys... For those of you still receiving the Exchangite by mail, you noticed a new look last week. From this point forward you will basically be receiving the on-line issue in print... Look for Paul Terwelp to be inducted on Friday... My thanks in advance to Jeff Dorsey for writing the next bulletin... That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love. |
