Quote of the Week

"Where the heck is Carlos?"

 - An observant Superintendent of Schools Lonny Lemon noticing that WGEM General Manager Carlos Fernandez, a regular attendee, was not on hand for the program by KHQA's Carol Sowers.

This Friday

 Ameren

We'll welcome Dan Selby (or a pinch hitter) from Ameren Illinois to tell us about the power company's restoration efforts after the June 27th straight line wind storm that hit our area hard. Funny how we take electrical service or running water for granted until we lose them; then everything we enjoy becomes a lot tougher or impossible. Count me in the many folks thankful for the great response Ameren, the City of Quincy, Adams County, and others provided. Join us Friday to learn about the "story behind the scenes" and to have a little fun at Quincy's Finest Hour.

Friday Last

Every once in a while we have one of those powerful programs that sort of slaps you across the face and makes you sit up and take notice. Unexpectedly (at least for me), that was the case last Friday when KHQA-TV's Carol Sowers and friends told us about the Just Let it Ring; Don't Text & Drive campaign. No laughing matter when Illinois State Police Trooper Mike Kindhart clarified the seriousness of the problem locally and nationally. As Trooper Kindhart told us, a distracted driver is 80% more likely to rear end-another car than someone who is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. That's a staggering statistic when we all know how dangerous DUI is. As Carol and the others asked, go to the KHQA website and make the pledge to Just Let it Ring. Yours truly with the quick introduction.

Congratulations Art!

Congratulations to Art Awerkamp for being named recipient of the John Tripp Distinguished Service Award. Like our previous two recipients and the man whom the award was named after, Art is and has been involved in all things Exchange Club. A Past President, past Macker Chairman, and current Smoke on the River Chairman, Art does it all and does it right. We are lucky to have such men like Art who have been committed to the good of our causes for several years. It is his "body of work", if you will, we recognize. We salute you, Art Awerkamp!

Smoke on the River BBQ & Blues Fest
Blue Pig

Chairman Art Awerkamp and the Smoke on the River Committee want you to know about a few changes to the 2011 event to be held September 9th & 10th:

·  We are partnering with the Mid Mississippi Muddy Waters Blues Society on our Saturday evening event.

·  We will have two bands Friday evening starting at 6:30 p.m.  In between those two bands, we will present the Service Person of the Year Award.  By doing this, we hope to draw a bit more attention to this great program.

·  On Saturday the music will start at 1:00 p.m. and go until the award ceremony around 3:00-4:00 p.m.

·  After the awards, the good folks from the MMMWBS will take over (about 5:00 p.m.) when four bands will take the stage back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

We will still be located in Kesler Park and we will still sale raffle tickets.  (Look for the tickets to be passed out on Friday, July 29th.)  More information to follow.

This & That

Jim Benz with the good prayer seeking the "attitude of gratitude." Kirk Frageman leading the pledge... President Steve Green recapping activities at the July board meeting including two, $250 donations; one to the Madonna House and the other to the YMCA's Kids Fit Zone... Dennis Koch provided a rundown on the National Convention he attended the week before in Detroit. Dennis told us that Lou Molitor from our Lincolnland District is National President-Elect. That's cool. Lou is a good man. Dennis also told us how some poor lady died right on the dance floor during the convention. A rambunctious gathering last week to say the least with many comments from the peanut gallery. When Smoke on the River Chairman Art Awerkamp was giving his report he mentioned our event was on Facebook to which Chuck Venvertloh asked why he hadn't been "friended" yet. Without missing a beat Art told Chuck his wife was a Facebook friend... Second reading on Paul Terwelp, sponsored by younger brother, Perry. Paul has been approved and we await his induction... Perry Terwelp, assisted by Gary Peters, administered the 50/50. Gary was pleasantly surprised to find he held the winning ticket but equally disappointed when he picked the wrong cards (joker first and then the jack of diamonds). Pot grows. $1,112 this week with 17 cards remaining. 12 men have volunteered to help Perry this week...   John Tripp Distinguished Award recipient Art Awerkamp unexpectedly chocked up during his acceptance speech as he recalled his father, Tom, and John Tripp. Both men meant a great deal to Art (and most of the rest of us too). Good to see so many of Art's family, including his beautiful wife, Cindy, and the matriarch of the Awerkamp family, Betty, join us for the presentation. Even Ted joined in on the fun... FYI: we have never had double-digits of Gengenbachers join us for a meal... That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
