Quote of the Week

"We hardly have any members here."

 - Mel Dillman's quick quip after then-President Kent Anderson asked if he had any guests.  That was on June 24th and now Kent cherishes his new title of Immediate Past President where he will not have to worry about any heckling from the crowd.

SMOKE ON THE RIVER MEETING THURSDAY NIGHT

 Pig face left

All Exchangites are invited to the Smoke on the River Meeting on Thursday evening; 5:30 p.m. at The Dock.  Dan Veihl and Art Awerkamp are Co-Chairman for the 2011 event slated to take place on Friday, September 9th and Saturday, September 10th.  Hope to see you then.

This Friday

 Satte Capitol

Always good to have one of our elected officials with us for an update and this week we'll welcome Illinois State Senator John Sullivan to the podium.  No matter your political view, the activities in Springfield are rarely dull and almost always touch your life or wallet one way or another.  In addition, we'll name the recipient of the John Tripp Distinguished Service Award.  Join us to hear Senator Sullivan's perspective on the current situation in our state's capital and for Quincy's Finest Hour.

July Board Meeting on Monday

President Steve Green invites officers, board members, and all interested Exchangites to his first board meeting next Monday, July 11th.  The meeting will begin promptly at 11:45 a.m. at The Pier (top level).

Friday Last X2

We heard from Dark River Derby Coalition President Heather Kath about the first women's flat-track roller derby league in Quincy.  Heather, the daughter of the late Al Kath (former Quincy Exchangite) did a great job breaking down their sport and how the local organization came to be.  Heather told us roller derby is the second largest growing sport in the country and that there are over 800 leagues worldwide.  The DRDC inaugural exhibition bout, "Red, White and Bruised", took place on July 2nd.  As I understand it, they were crushed 177-59 but it was a huge success with crowd of about 500 fans loving every minute of it.  Yours truly with the introduction and the mispronunciation of our speaker's last name.  (FYI - Kath does not rhyme with path or bath.)

Congratulations, Dennis!
Congratulations to Dennis Koch for being named Exchangite of the Year.  If you are involved in our club, you know Dennis has his helping hand in about everything.  In short, he is all Exchange, all the time.  Named the recipient of the John Tripp Distinguished Service Award last year, Dennis is single-handedly responsible for taking the words I type and putting them into a slick electronic newsletter.  I write the darn bulletin but still get excited to see it after Dennis does his work.  This is just one small sampling of the difference he makes at the club and district level.  We salute you, Dennis Koch!

This & That

My apology to all Exchangites (especially Kent Anderson and Steve Green) for no bulletin last week.  Good to be back at it with some form of normalcy this week though...  I missed the installation of officers; an important day to thank the outgoing president for his leadership and welcome the new man.  Traditionally a poorly attended event, I'm sure I wasn't alone...  I hope you and your family were able to attend and enjoy the July 4th event at the Illinois Veterans Home.  Thousands of folks were on grounds for the fireworks.  Pretty cool stuff from my perspective.  My sincere thanks Mayor John Spring and his designated fire and police administrators who helped with the planning of the event.  I can't say enough good about Carlos Fernandez and his leadership in our community.  His work with the Honor Flight is fantastic and his influence on the successful July 4th event was immeasurable.  We are lucky to have you, Carlos.  Thank you for all you do...  Last Friday Skip Rueter had the right 50/50 ticket but picked the wrong card (five of diamonds) and the week before Tony Nutt had the right ticket but also picked the wrong card (three of spades) so the pot grows.  Should be right at $1,000.00 with 18 cards remaining for this week.  Now it gets real interesting...  That's all for now, 'til next time, may God's love, grace, and peace be with you and the ones you love.
